Mairie Écot

Écot is a French municipality with 503 inhabitants (as of January 1 2017) in Doubs in the region Bourgogne Franche-Comté .

geography

Écot is located at 530  m , about eleven kilometers south-southwest of the city of Montbéliard (as the crow flies). The village extends in the northern French Jura , on a tabular Jura- like plateau around which the Doubs flows in a large arc, north of the Lomont range .

The area of the 11.02 km² large municipality covers a section of the French Jura. The main part of the area is taken up by the plateau of Écot, which is on average 500 m. It is mostly made up of arable and meadow land, but also shows some larger forest areas. The plateau is bounded in the west by the side valleys of the Ruisseau du Bié , in the east by the valley Les Combes , whose upper part with its side valleys also belongs to Écot. The northern boundary runs along the forest edges of Bois des Charmes and Les Murgers . To the south, the community area extends over a ridge to the densely wooded plateau of Les Grands Bois , which slopes steeply to the south and east to the valleys of Ranceuse and Doubs, respectively. At 564 m, the highest point of Écot is reached in the Grands Bois.

Neighboring municipalities of Écot are Étouvans and Dampierre-sur-le-Doubs in the north, Mathay and Bourguignon in the east, Pont-de-Roide-Vermondans and Rémondans-Vaivre in the south and Villars-sous-Écot in the west.

history

Excavations show that there was a church in Écot as early as 1040. In the Middle Ages the village belonged to the Mathay rule. Together with Franche-Comté , it came to France with the Peace of Nijmegen in 1678.

During the Second World War in 1944, the French partisans of the Resistance gathered and formed the Maquis d'Écot. On July 8, 1944 at 6:45 a.m. the Germans attacked the Maquisards, the losses were numerous on both sides.

A "path of remembrance and peace" reminds of this time, which brings the history of the resistance movement of this region closer to 15 different stations.

With 503 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2017), Écot is one of the small communities in the Doubs department. After the population had decreased significantly in the first half of the 20th century (420 people were still counted in 1891), a marked increase in population has been recorded since the 1970s.

Economy and Infrastructure

Until well into the 20th century, Écot was primarily a village characterized by agriculture (arable farming, fruit growing and cattle breeding) and forestry. In addition, there are now some local small businesses. In the meantime, the village has also turned into a residential community. Many workers are therefore commuters who work in the larger towns in the area and in the Montbéliard agglomeration.

The village is located away from the major thoroughfares on a departmental road that leads from Colombier-Fontaine to Pont-de-Roide-Vermondans . The nearest connection to the A36 motorway , which crosses the municipality, is approximately seven kilometers away. Further road connections exist with Étouvans, Voujeaucourt and Villars-sous-Écot.
