Winner: Soviet Union |
The 33rd Ice Hockey World Championship and 44th Ice Hockey European Championship took place in Yugoslavia for the first time . The games were played from March 3 to 13, 1966 , venues were Ljubljana , Zagreb and Jesenice . 19 teams took part in this World Cup.
In contrast to the previous year, a C-World Championship was held again in this year's title fights. Since only seven teams played in Group B at the 1965 World Cup , there was a vacancy in this season. The award took place in a qualification tournament in Bucharest , to which the teams from France and Italy , which failed in the B group qualification last year, as well as the Romanian team, who waived at short notice a year ago, were admitted. The teams from South Africa and Denmark who did not participate in the previous year and returned to the competition were placed in group C. In addition, a B representation of the Yugoslav host played in this group out of competition.
The USSR became the superior world and European champion for the fourth year in a row . Although the old and new world champions surprisingly surrendered a point against Sweden , they clearly defeated Czechoslovakia 7-1 in the decisive game for the title . It was the sixth World Cup and ninth European Championship title for the USSR.

Final table of the EM
In this tournament there are different versions of the final result of the European ice hockey championship . As in previous years, one version (version A) only takes into account the World Cup placement as a criterion, the other version (version B) takes into account the matches between the European teams and thus sets up its own final table of the European Championship. In version A, Sweden is listed as the bronze medal winner , in version B the GDR (the latter version has been preferred since 1999).
