history

Headquarters
Wander artwork by the iron sculptor Silvan Köppel was created in Berneck 2017 (at a Volvo dealer) as a pictorial representation of the takeover of Volvo (Car) by the Geely Group (Dragons)

On November 6, 1986, the company's founder Li Shufu opened the first manufactory for refrigerator parts. In April 1992 the company started manufacturing motorcycles. On August 8, 1998, Geely's first automobile left the factory in Linhai, Zhejiang Province . In April 2003, the 100,000th vehicle rolled off the assembly line. Geely is relatively successful in China, but the brand is little known in the US and EU . The technology of the first models came largely from the Japanese automobile manufacturer Daihatsu .

In 2004 Geely sold 200,000 vehicles, and in 2008 221,900 vehicles. In 2009, 325,413 vehicles were produced. However, the goal of producing two million units per year by 2015 could not be achieved. This has been postponed to 2020.

In September 2005, Geely presented itself for the first time at the International Motor Show (IAA) in Frankfurt am Main.

In 2008, Li expressed an interest in taking over automaker Volvo , a subsidiary of Ford Motor Company . The offer was repeated in March 2009 and accepted by Ford in December. The contract was signed at the end of March 2010. The purchase price was $ 1.8 billion. As announced on April 20, 2010, Geely will relocate the headquarters of the Volvo plant to Shanghai in connection with the construction of another automobile plant. However, no decision has yet been made, according to a statement from chairman Li Shu Fu.

According to Li Shufu, the company pays the best wages in the commercial sector. As a party member, Li is also allegedly campaigning for higher wages across the automotive industry.

The newly established China Euro Vehicle Technology AB (CEVT) is responsible for developing the new Compact Modular Architecture (CMA) platform for Volvo and Lynk & Co responsible.

In 2012 the company set up a joint venture in Barysaw with the Belarusian company BelAZ . The company shares are 50% in BelAZ, 32.5% in Geely and 17.5% in the Belarusian-Chinese automotive supplier SoyuzAvtotekhnologii. The joint venture is called BelGee .

On April 7, 2016, the Belarusian President Aljaksandr Lukashenka issued an instruction at the Belarusian Motor Show, according to which in future all Belarusian officials are obliged to buy Geely cars in order to promote the domestic economy, since the vehicles are sold by BelGee.

On May 24, 2017, Geely acquired 51% of the company shares in Lotus Cars .

Geely has been the largest shareholder in Volvo Trucks AB since the end of 2017 and the largest single shareholder in Daimler AG since February 2018 with 9.7 percent of the shares.

Research and patents

In 2007, Geely applied for a total of more than 120 property rights, around a third of which were patents and two thirds utility models. Compared to patents, utility models are cheaper and less research-intensive, but protection by a utility model also has a shorter duration. Registrations for the protection of intellectual property have doubled annually since 2005. From 2005 to 2006, the number of registrations actually increased almost fivefold.

Geely development of patent and utility model applications

Geely announced its new vehicle strategy "Geely Intelligent Power" in 2018, which includes a total of 30 new electric and hybrid cars by 2020. In 2015 Geely announced its “Blue Geely Initiative” with the promise that 90 percent of the brand's sales by 2020 would be electric vehicles. Together with Geyly's iNTEC technology, Geely has also unveiled a new energy development strategy that pursues four technological paths to become the market leader in new energy technologies, alternative fuels, fuel cells, all-electric and hybrid technologies.

Brands

Originally a manufacturer of refrigerators, a state manufacturer of motorcycles was taken over in the mid-1990s and their production developed further. Geely is now a leading manufacturer of motorcycles in China and also has various brands in this field.

brand comment
Geely Car production was started under the parent brand in 2002. From 2010 to 2012 it was to be discontinued in favor of the three new brands Englon, Gleagle and Emgrand. After a slump in sales from 2011 to 2013, the three brands were merged again under the common Geely umbrella in 2014.
Shanghai Maple Automobile
(SMA)
Geely has held a stake in SMA since 2002 and took it over completely as an entry-level brand in 2008. Between 2010 and 2012, the SMA brand was replaced by Englon.
Englon From 2010, Englon was the new brand for the inexpensive entry-level segment, replacing SMA. In 2014 Englon was brought back under the Geely roof and replaced a little later by Vision.
Gleagle From 2010, Gleagle represented the mid-price segment, and above that, the vehicles of the previous Geely brand were sold. Gleagle was also reintegrated into Geely in 2014.
Emgrand Emgrand was supposed to occupy the higher price segment and be supplied with mostly newly developed vehicles. Has also been reintegrated into Geely.
Vision
(远景 = Yuanjiang)
Vision has replaced Englon as a sub-brand for the entry-level segment since around 2016.
Kandi Geely has been running a 50/50% joint venture with Kandi Technology , a manufacturer of drive technology for electric cars, since 2013 (initially via SMA) . The resulting joint subsidiary, Zhejiang Kandi Vehicles, was supposed to manufacture electric cars for the Chinese market, but has also been exported to the USA since 2018.
Zhidou (ZD Auto) ZD Auto has been a joint venture since 2014 in which Geely holds the majority. ZD Auto built two-seater electric city cars through 2019.
Lynk & Co The brand is positioned between Geely's Chinese brands and Volvo and has been offering models with improved connectivity for a younger audience on the technical basis of Volvo's smaller vehicles since 2018.
Geometry All-electric cars have been available through Geometry since 2019, primarily for the Chinese market.
Brands from foreign holdings
Volvo In 2010, the then much larger, but ailing Swedish Volvo Personvagnar was taken over by Ford and renovated. This includes the rights to use the Volvo name (jointly with Volvo Group) and Polestar.
Polestar In 2015, Geely / Volvo acquired the division of a racing team (now Cyan Racing) as an in-house Volvo tuner and the naming rights to Polestar. Electric vehicles based on Volvo are to be offered, primarily for export. There was also a brand launch in Berlin at the beginning of 2019.
London EV Company
(LEVC)

After working together since 2006, Geely took over the London Taxi Taxi Company in 2013 and renamed it the London Electric Vehicle Company (LEVC) in 2017.

proton In 2017 Geely took over 49.9% of the shares in Proton from DRB-HICOM .
lotus Together with the stake in Proton, Geely also acquired 51% of the shares in Lotus, a British manufacturer of sports cars, which is said to have special know-how in the lightweight construction of vehicles.
Terrafugia In 2017, Geely bought Terrafugia, a US developer and manufacturer of a roadworthy small aircraft. The approval process should be completed and the production of pre-ordered machines may start in 2019. A similar vehicle as a whiz kid is said to be in development.

Car model overview

Electrocar Panda 2009

The same model was / is offered under a large number of names. Causes for this include a. that initially models from other manufacturers were manufactured under license, various other manufacturers were adopted and, in some cases, country-specific different names were used in the export. In addition, existing Geely models were temporarily offered under the brands Englon / Gleagle / Emgrand and these were then converted into sub-brands of Geely. The sub-brand Englon was later replaced by Vision (= YuanJing). The terms mentioned here are only an excerpt as far as they are mentioned in the German-language Wikipedia.
