List of městys in the Czech Republic

In the list of Městys in the Czech Republic , all 224 municipalities (Obec) are listed, which have been given the status of Městys since 2006 . The dates indicate the time when it was effective.

history

Since the 13th century there was a distinction between villages (Ves), towns (Město) and minor towns (Městečko). Since the 16th century, the minor cities were called market towns (Městys).

In the 1762 census in the Kingdom of Bohemia , 465 market towns were identified. As of October 31, 1857 there were 420 and on September 29, 1938 535 Městys. The last time Nový Hrozenkov received the status of Městys in 1948 . Since 1954 the name Městys has not been used any more.

Renewed status

Since 2006 the status of Městys has existed again in accordance with Section 3 (2) of the Law on Municipalities in the Czech Republic. The chairman of the House of Representatives assigns the status at the request of the municipality. The law does not set any criteria for this, only a statement from the government is required. Since that time, almost exclusively municipalities have been appointed to Městys that had this status before 1954. For the first time on November 11, 2008 this status was reassigned to Ševětín .
