List of Swedish World Cup participants
The list of Swedish football world championship participants lists all Swedish football players who have been in the officially registered squad of the Swedish national team since the introduction of the World Cup finals in 1930 , as well as Swedish football coaches who were primarily responsible for looking after the Swedish or foreign national teams during a final tournament.
background
After the founding of FIFA in 1904, the first thoughts on hosting a World Cup arose, but initially the Olympic football tournaments served exclusively as a transcontinental test of strength for the various national teams . In 1928 the world association finally decided to host a world championship tournament, which was to be held in Uruguay .
In 1904 Sweden was represented by Svenska Bollspelsförbundet when FIFA was founded. A short time later, Svenska Fotbollförbundet took over the right to represent Swedish football at FIFA. Under his leadership, the first international match of the national team took place in 1908 , which in the following years regularly took part in the Olympic Games and achieved its first international success with the bronze medal at the Olympic soccer tournament in 1924 .
When the World Cup was held for the first time, with the finals taking place in Uruguay in 1930 , there was no athletic qualification; the participating national teams accepted the invitation of FIFA and Uruguay. Sweden refrained from participating. At the subsequent World Cup finals in Italy four years later , the Swedish national team qualified for the tournament for the first time. Since then, the team has participated in the qualifying rounds and qualified for ten finals. In addition, she took part in the 1958 World Cup in Sweden as a host, for which no qualification participation was necessary. Thus, there are currently eleven finals for the selection team.
Since the first participation in the finals in 1934, those responsible have appointed a total of 191 players to the respective World Cup squads. Henrik Larsson, with 13 games in three finals, leads the ranking ahead of Bo Larsson and Kalle Svensson with eleven finals each, followed by Björn Nordqvist , Klas Ingesson , Roland Nilsson , Ronnie Hellström , Thomas Ravelli and Tomas Brolin, six players with ten appearances each. The respective squads included 54 players who were not considered in the final round matches. Only Curt Svensson and Ingemar Haraldsson remained as World Cup participants without any international appearances.

Trainer
Swedish national team
The compilation of the Swedish team for international matches was initially the responsibility of a selection committee ( Uttagningskommittén ). During the game, the chairman of the committee was usually responsible for the selection. However, during the tournaments in which the Swedish selection took part, there were sometimes trainers who at least instructed the training. With the English coach George Raynor at the side of the selection committee headed by Eric Persson , the team achieved their greatest success at a World Cup finals, when they reached the final against Brazil at the 1958 World Cup in their own country and, after a 2: 5 defeat, the vice-world title was achieved.
The Swedish Football Association only introduced an official national coach ( Förbundskapten ) after missing the qualification for the 1962 World Cup . Under Lennart Nyman , however, the selection team also missed participation in the 1966 World Cup , only under his successor Orvar Bergmark - as a second division player himself part of the team that became vice world champion in 1958 - and Georg Ericson succeeded in participating in the finals again. Under Lars Arnesson in the 1980s again outside of the major tournaments, Olle Nordin was only the third full-time coach at the 1990 World Cup to coach a Swedish national team at a World Cup finals.
Tommy Svensson led the Swedish national team to the greatest success in recent history at the 1994 World Cup , when they reached the semi-finals for the first time since 1958 and took the bronze medal after defeating Bulgaria . After missing the finals four years later, Lars Lagerbäck led the selection to the round of 16 at the finals in 2002 and in the 2006 World Cup , in the first tournament still in a duo with Tommy Söderberg . A third tournament participation with the Swedish selection was denied to him, in qualifying for the 2010 World Cup , he failed with the selection as group third behind Denmark and Portugal .
Foreign national teams
In 2002, Sven-Göran Eriksson was the first Swedish coach to take part in a world championship tournament with a foreign team. The English national team he supervised failed in the quarter-finals to Brazil. Four years later he was eliminated with her in the same round against Portugal. In 2010, Eriksson was less successful as coach of Ivory Coast , at the first finals held on the African continent in South Africa, the team only finished third in the group stage.
After Lagerbäck had missed the 2010 final tournament with the Swedish selection, he - as the second Swedish coach of a foreign national team - was still on the sidelines during the World Cup finals, as the Nigerian association had signed him to look after the Nigerian national team at the beginning of 2010 . With just one plus point, he finished last in the group with the team, and then his engagement ended.
