Culture and history

history

On the basis of archaeological finds, the human settlement of today's municipal area has been proven since ancient times. A first mention was made in the year 994 under the name Villa Alsatis , 1156 followed by Castrum Montispesati and the current naming almost resembling variation Montpesat in 1435. A papal document of 10 December 1156 to certify the ownership of the village by the Bishops of Nimes to in the past. In this epoch the place had a strategic importance due to its location on the southern edge of the Cevennes, which is why it had relatively large fortifications. Montpezat became the scene of war when a group of Protestants hid in the local castle during the Huguenot Wars around 1570. These were ultimately defeated and all murdered.

The village was built in the form of a circulade , a form of settlement common in the historic Languedoc region, in which the houses are arranged in a circle around the castle or the manor. This structure probably emerged in the 11th century and has been preserved to this day, although an expansion of the district was permitted from around the 16th century and the place has continued to grow in other directions in the further course of history.

Buildings

The castle that exists today goes back to a tower called Tour du Diable (Devil's Tower), which was probably built around 1060 and demolished around 1900 due to a ruinous condition. At the time of the Renaissance it was expanded and during the French Revolution fell victim to looting and arson, for which gangs from neighboring towns were responsible. The protective walls around the place were built in the 12th or 13th century and were partially destroyed in a battle of the Huguenot Wars in 1573. Some remains of the former 450-meter-long walls and one of four passages into the village, which is the southern entrance, remain.

In 1925 the building of the Montpezat wine cooperative was built and two extensions were added between 1928 and 1929. Although the cooperative had 134 members by 1970, operations were closed in 2004.

Sports

There is a football and tennis club in Montpezat. There are also other sports on offer in the martial arts of judo, mountain biking and the internationally popular boules variant pétanque .

In 1793 the community was inhabited by 465 people and it initially experienced a significant increase to around 600 residents around the middle of the 19th century. This was followed by a rapid decline until the number stabilized at just over 500 at the beginning of the 20th century. Among other things, the Second World War brought another decline, so that in 1946 no more than 414 inhabitants were counted. From the 1970s a phase of strong population growth began.
