overview
The nominations were announced on July 19, 2012 by actress Kerry Washington ( Scandal ) and Jimmy Kimmel at the Leonard H. Goldenson Theater . Programs that were broadcast from June 1, 2011 to May 31, 2012 were taken into account.
The most frequently nominated was the fifth season of the drama series Mad Men ( AMC ) and the television multipart American Horror Story ( FX Network ), each of which received 17 mentions. If Mad Men wins the Best Drama Series category, it could become the most-honored production in that category. The format, which is about working in an advertising agency in New York in the 1960s, won the award from 2008 to 2011 for its previous seasons and shares the top spot with the series Hill Street Police Station (Best Drama Series 1981–1984), LA Law - Star Lawyers, Tricks, Trials (1987, 1989–1991) and The West Wing - In the Center of Power (2000–2003). Due to disagreements between producer Matthew Weiner and the broadcasting station, the fifth season only started after a 17-month break on US television.
The British television series Downton Abbey by Julian Fellowes , which is broadcast on PBS and which was also considered as a drama series in the category Best Miniseries or TV Film (2011 winner), and Hatfields & McCoys ( History ), has 16 nominations each . The three-part production with Kevin Costner , Bill Paxton and Tom Berenger dramatizes the historic Hatfield-McCoy feud (1878-1891). Philip Kaufman's TV film Hemingway & Gellhorn (15 nominations) with Clive Owen and Nicole Kidman in the roles of Ernest Hemingway and Martha Gellhorn , the series Modern Family and the comedy show Saturday Night Live (14 each) follow, with more than ten nominations . the series Breaking Bad and 30 Rock and the episode A Scandal in Belgravia from the British television series Sherlock (13 each). For twelve nominations each, the series Boardwalk Empire and Jay Roach political film Game Change - The Sarah Palin Effect with Julianne Moore in the title role of the former US vice-presidential candidate Sarah Palin , followed by the fantasy series Game of Thrones (11 nominations).
The comedy series Girls and Veep - The Vice President and the 2012 Golden Globe Award- winning drama series Homeland are among the nominations for the first time alongside Downton Abbey . The US comedian Louis CK managed to set a new record for individual artists . He received a total of seven nominations for both the Louie series and the special Louis CK Live at the Beacon Theater . Actress, director and screenwriter Lena Dunham got four nominations for girls . Amy Poehler (as actress and screenwriter on the comedy series Parks and Recreation ) and Michael J. Fox (guest actor in the series Good Wife and Lass es, Larry! ) Received two nominations each . and Jon Hamm (lead actor in Mad Men and guest actor in 30 Rock ). Two-time Emmy Prize winner Kathryn Joosten , who died at the beginning of June 2012, received a posthumous mention and was considered for her portrayal in the series Desperate Housewives .
New records for most single nominations were set by cinematographer Hector Ramirez ( Dancing with the Stars , ABC; 68th nomination) for men and producer Sheila Nevins ( The Weight Of The Nation For Kids: The Great Cafeteria Takeover , HBO; 59 Nomination) among women. In terms of programming, Saturday Night Live set a new record with 156 Emmy nominations through 2012.
