As an OFC member, Australia first played against an African (South Africa), Asian (India), European (Greece), North American (Canada) and South American team (Uruguay) and first against Egypt, Chile, Germany, England, France, Indonesia, Iraq, Iran, Japan, Columbia, Kuwait, Malaysia, Mexico, New Zealand, Nigeria, Slovakia, South Korea, South Vietnam, Republic of China / Taiwan (Chinese Taipei), Venezuela, and the United States.

Australia was the only OFC member so far to play against Argentina, Bulgaria, Denmark, the GDR, Greece, Hong Kong, Ireland, Yugoslavia, Cambodia, Kenya, Croatia, Macedonia, the Netherlands, Northern Ireland, North Korea, the Philippines, Sweden, Rhodesia (now Zimbabwe) , Czech Republic, Czechoslovakia and Tunisia. American Samoa, New Caledonia, New Zealand, Papua New Guinea and Tonga suffered their biggest defeats against Australia. Australia were the first international opponents for New Zealand recognized by FIFA.
