Robert B. Vance (politician, 1793)

Robert Brank Vance (* 1793 near Asheville , North Carolina , †  November 6, 1827 with Saluda Gap , North Carolina) was an American politician . Between 1823 and 1825 he represented the state of North Carolina in the US House of Representatives .

Career

Robert Vance was the uncle of the later congressman of the same name Robert B. Vance (1828-1899) and his brother Zebulon (1830-1894), the governor of North Carolina and US Senator . He attended the public schools in his home country and the Newton Academy in Asheville. After a subsequent medical degree and his license as a doctor, he began to work in Asheville in 1818 in this profession. He also held a number of local offices in his homeland.

In the congressional election of 1822 , Vance was elected as a non-party candidate in the twelfth constituency of North Carolina in the US House of Representatives in Washington, DC , where he succeeded Felix Walker on March 4, 1823 . Since he lost in the elections of 1824 to Samuel Price Carson , he could only serve one term in Congress until March 3, 1825 . In 1826 Vance sought his return to Congress without success against Carson. During the election campaign there was an insult on Vance's part about the past of his opponent's father. Then Samuel Carson challenged him to a duel . In this Robert Vance was fatally wounded. He was buried in the family cemetery near Asheville.
