geography

Sainte-Marie is at 375  m , about eight kilometers west of the city of Montbéliard (as the crow flies). The village extends in the southern part of a plateau, which is embedded in the undulating landscape between the river valleys of Doubs in the south and Ognon in the north-west, on the western edge of the height of the Grand Bois.

The area of the 7.17 km² municipal area comprises a section of the gently undulating landscape north of the Doube valley. The main part of the area is taken up by the Arcey plateau, which averages 370 m. It has a width of four kilometers and a length of about five kilometers and consists mainly of arable and meadow land. To the west of the village, the forest area of the Chênois extends (up to 390 m). In the south the plateau descends gradually towards the Doubstal. To the northeast, the community area extends up to the height of the Grand Bois ( 446  m ) and to the southeast to the long ridge of the Forêt du Mont Bart , on which the highest point of Sainte-Marie is reached at 449 m. The entire area shows no surface watercourses because the rainwater seeps into the karstified subsoil.

Neighboring communities of Sainte-Marie are Saint-Julien-lès-Montbéliard in the north, Présentevillers in the east, Bavans , Lougres and Montenois in the south and Arcey in the west.

Since the Middle Ages, Sainte-Marie belonged to the domain of the Counts of Montbéliard . With the annexation of this county, the village finally came into French hands in 1793. Today, Sainte-Marie is part of the Pays de Montbéliard Agglomération municipal association .

Economy and Infrastructure

Until well into the 20th century, Sainte-Marie was mainly a village characterized by agriculture (arable farming, fruit growing and cattle breeding) and forestry. In addition, there is now a company in the transport industry and some local small businesses. In the meantime, the village has also turned into a residential community. Many workers are therefore commuters who do their work in the Montbéliard agglomeration.

The village is located off the major thoroughfares on a departmental road that leads from Bart to Arcey. The closest connection to the A36 motorway is around twelve kilometers away. Further road connections exist with Lougres, Montenois, Désandans, Échenans and Saint-Julien-lès-Montbéliard.
