← UEFA Champions League 2000/01
The traditional Hampden Park in Glasgow
The 2001/02 UEFA Champions League was the 10th season of the most important European competition for club teams in football under this name and the 47th overall.
72 teams from 48 member associations took part again, with the countries being allowed to send four teams in places 1–3 of the UEFA five-year ranking , three in places 4–6 and two teams in places 7–15.
The final took place on May 15, 2002 at Hampden Park in Glasgow and Real Madrid beat Bayer 04 Leverkusen 2-1. It was already the ninth title for the “royal” , who are record winners in this competition to this day. Finalist Bayer Leverkusen had already finished second in the Bundesliga shortly before Borussia Dortmund and also failed in the DFB Cup final against Schalke 04, the repeated failure in a final is considered the birth of the term " Vizekusen " for the Werkself .
mode
There were no changes to the game mode compared to the previous season. For the 1st group stage, two teams each qualified from the countries ranked 1-3 in the UEFA five-year ranking , Germany (including defending champions and current champions Bayern Munich), Italy and Spain, and two started in the 3rd qualifying round. Two teams from England, France and the Netherlands (places 4-6) were also seeded for the group stage and one team each started in the third qualifying round. One team each from Greece, Portugal, Russia and the Czech Republic (places 7-10) were set for the group stage and one team each started in the third qualifying round, with the second Portuguese representative FC Porto already joining in the second qualifying round. Norway, Scotland, Switzerland, Turkey and the Ukraine (places 11-15) each sent one team to the 2nd and one team each to the 3rd qualifying round.
In the first group stage, eight groups of four teams were played. The first and second in each group qualified for the second group stage. The third-placed finishers in each group were allowed to continue playing in the 2001/02 UEFA Cup . In the second group stage, four groups of four teams were played. Here the first and second in each group qualified for the quarter-finals. In the case of a tie, the following applies in the group phases:
If two teams were tied, the following criteria were used to decide:
Points from direct games.
Goals scored in direct matches.
Away goals in direct games
Goal difference from all group matches.
Scored goals in all group matches.
Higher club coefficient at the beginning of the competition.
