The Luzhniki Stadium in Moscow before the final
In particular, the final phase of the finals was marked by increased drama. While both teams fought a largely even duel for almost 120 minutes, Didier Drogba was sent off in the 116th minute for violent behavior. Drogba, who was known as a sure shooter and was scheduled for the subsequent penalty shootout, was no longer allowed to compete and was replaced by John Terry. However, this slipped on the decisive fifth penalty and put the ball against the post, which kept Manchester United in the game. After Anderson, Kalou and Giggs converted their penalties, van der Sar held against Anelka, which brought Manchester United the win.
