The 2nd Bundesliga 2017/18 was the 44th season of the second highest German division in men's football . It began on July 28, 2017 with VfL Bochum's game against FC St. Pauli (0: 1) and ended with the 34th matchday on May 13, 2018. From December 19, 2017 to January 23, 2018, the Season interrupted by a winter break.
Fortuna Düsseldorf secured promotion to the Bundesliga after 32 match days, and 1. FC Nuremberg one match day later; 1. FC Nürnberg set a new record with the eighth promotion to the Bundesliga. The championship was decided on the last match day in a direct duel between the two promoted teams, which Fortuna won. Holstein Kiel was able to reach third place in the autumn championship and with one game day before the end, but lost to VfL Wolfsburg in the relegation games .
In the relegation battle after 32 matchdays with the relegation of 1. FC Kaiserslautern, the first decision was made relatively late. Until recently, six clubs were in danger of relegation, in the end Eintracht Braunschweig , who was a participant in the promotion relegation in the previous year, had to relegate to the third division. The FC Erzgebirge Aue had to be relegated to the Karlsruher SC and was able to secure the class there.
