The club emerged in 1971 as FC Admira / Wacker from a merger of SK Admira and SC Wacker . As the legal successor of both clubs you can adorn yourself with the titles of both teams. history

1971–1979: Wacker joining and first sensation against Inter Milan

On July 7, 1971, the second-rate SC Wacker from Vienna was connected to FC Admira from Maria Enzersdorf and the associated renaming to FC Admira / Wacker . The continued existence of the eight-time champion Admira remained unaffected, the previous club colors black and white remained and the marketing as the football flagship of Lower Austria with the integration of the state colors blue and yellow was continued in this form. In the first year under a new name, however, the club faced major sporting problems. Despite the renowned coach Karl Schlechta , the Südstadters were in danger of relegation and had to accept defeats against their own amateurs in the ÖFB Cup and against SK Bischofshofen in the league, which apart from this match would never win a first division game. So Ernst Ocffekt was brought in as the new coach, who should lead the prominent team back to the top half of the table.

Under their new coach, the Südstädter could soon cause the first big surprise. As fourth in the championship in 1973, Admira / Wacker was entitled to take part in the UEFA Cup , where, however, with Inter Milan, an apparently unsolvable task was drawn. The team, which consisted of some little-known players, won the first leg in the Südstadt with a goal from Kurt Swojanovsky 1-0. In the San Siro stadium in Milan, in front of 25,000 spectators in the game led by Rudolf Glöckner , the Italian superstars were only able to take the lead in the 57th minute with a goal from Adelio Moro , and it was only in extra time that Roberto Boninsegna made it 2-0 (92 .), but Günter Kaltenbrunner's goal to 2-1 in the 97th minute gave the Admirans a sensational advance against Inter thanks to the away goal rule. In the second round, however, came the end against Fortuna Düsseldorf . A 2-1 home win was followed by a 0-3 away defeat. Admira / Wacker was able to hold its own in the championship in the following years and in 1979 reached for the first national title win since 1966. They reached the cup final, but lost to SSW Innsbruck in two games with 1: 1 and 0: 1.

1979–1995: Rise to the national top and time in the European Cup

After the Südstadters were always in the top half of the championship table in the 80s, they were able to intervene again decisively in the championship and ÖFB Cup championship fights towards the end of the decade. The rise was due in particular to the new Admira storm Rodax - Knaller - Schaub , who scored 116 goals together in the 1988/89 and 1989/90 seasons. In 1989, the club was runner-up behind FC Swarovski Tirol , which was trained by Ernst Happel , and also had to admit defeat to the Tyroleans in the final 2: 0 (H) and 2: 6 (A) in the Cup. The revenge against the double winner from Innsbruck finally came in the Supercup: After a 1-1 draw after extra time, the Admirans had better nerve in the penalty shoot-out and won 3-1. Further highlights in national football events these days were the entry into the cup finals of 1992 and 1996, which were lost 1-0 to FK Austria Wien and 3-1 to SK Sturm Graz .

The good placements in the championship and cup helped the Südstadters to numerous appearances in the European Cup. In the European Cup of Cup winners, FC Admira / Wacker reached the quarter-finals against Anderlecht (0: 2 and 1: 1) via AEL Limassol and Ferencvárosi TC in 1990 . Against Limassol, the goals from Schaub, Knaller and Rodax to the 3-0 home win only fell in the last 10 minutes. A similar drama occurred in the 1992 European Cup Winners' Cup. After advancing through Cardiff City , the Admirans lost their home game against Royal Antwerp, despite leading at halftime, 2: 4 and were in Antwerp at the break, with one man less, 2: 2 . In a sensational second half there were four more goals away from home, so that extra time followed, in which the 3: 4 fell for Antwerp. The last victory in the European Cup was against AS Cannes : In the 1994/95 UEFA Cup season, the club had been able to prevail against Górnik Zabrze and met the French in the next round. 1995–2008: Bosman decision, SC Niederösterreich and Niedergang

With the Bosman ruling in 1995 came the club's sudden relegation. With his youth academy in the federal sports center in Südstadt, he had built up an almost inexhaustible reservoir of talented young players. These club-owned players were instrumental in the greatest successes of FC Admira / Wacker, and their sale had so far brought much-needed funds. The Bosman decision now allowed a transfer-free club change, which meant the departure of its talents for the club without getting any money for it. The 1995/96 season ended Admira / Wacker with ninth place. This placement made two relegation games necessary to stay in the Bundesliga against the runner-up in the 2nd Bundesliga. FC Admira / Wacker lost their first game at home against their satellite club SV Gerasdorf 3: 4. With a 6-0 victory in the second leg, however, the Admirans secured the first division place.

After the relegation games, the club's management announced the renaming of the club to SC Niederösterreich Admira / Wacker - a project by Lower Austrian governor Erwin Pröll . A merger with the VSE St. Pölten was planned, but it did not materialize. Nevertheless, attempts were made to create a new Lower Austrian identity for the club, which due to its roots was still a “Viennese” club for many. In addition, the now no longer financially strong club should be able to continue to secure its gaming operations through subsidies. In its only season, however, the SCN only finished last in the table and only escaped relegation due to the merger of the two major Linz clubs Linz ASK and FC Linz, which was decided after the end of the season . The club inherited the relegation place of FC Linz and prevailed against the second in the 2nd Bundesliga, SK Vorwärts Steyr with 5: 1. The "SC Niederösterreich" project failed in the first year and the club's management was forced to take further measures.

After Admira was now on the verge of bankruptcy and since there was also VfB Mödling in the Mödling area , which in the 1990s kept commuting between the first and second division and the fan potential for two clubs from the region did not seem to exist , it was decided to join the VfB to Admira. VfB Admira Wacker Mödling played for the first time in the 1997/98 season in the highest Austrian league with the extended club colors black, white and red, but the abbreviation was always left on Admira. Notable in the following period were the commitments of some prominent players such as Tomasz Iwan and Vladimir Jugović , who surprisingly could be signed in the 2003/04 season. Nevertheless, the club mostly found itself in the lower half of the table and also rose in 2006 to the second-rate first division, after having been second-rate in the years 1999 to 2001.

In the 2006/07 season, many players left the club. With a young team you were involved in the relegation battle from the start. 2008–2014: Trenkwalder era and return to Europe

After Admira's sporting and financial descent into the regional league , Richard Trenkwalder , President of ASK Schwadorf, began his commitment in the southern part of the city. He operated the renaming of his Schwadorfer playing in the first division in "FC Trenkwalder Admira" and the relocation of the club headquarters from Schwadorf to Mödling. Trenkwalder's goal was the promotion of Admira from the first to the Bundesliga in the next two years. On July 10, 2008, Heribert Weber, a new sports director, was hired. After a false start in the 2008/09 season of the First League , where they only got one point out of five games , a new coach was introduced on August 9, 2008 with Walter Schachner . Promoted Trenkwalder Admira played a sensational first Bundesliga season 2011/2012. When returning to the European Cup, FC Admira Wacker faced Lithuanian club Zalgiris Vilnius in the second qualifying round . After a 0-2 home defeat, the team retired after a 2-2 in the second leg.

The 2012/2013 season started rather mixed because of the triple burden with the Bundesliga, qualification for the Europa League and ÖFB Samsung Cup. To make matters worse, striker Philipp Hosiner left the club shortly before the transfer ended. The following autumn, the team got into a serious crisis, partly due to bad luck with injuries, in which they only scored one point from eleven games. There was also a lengthy tug-of-war about the talent Marcel Sabitzer , who was associated with various top European clubs in autumn, but ended up with the Austrian record champions SK Rapid Wien .

In spring 2013, a significant increase was seen, also due to many player purchases in winter. However, this was also the case with the direct competitors for relegation, FC Wacker Innsbruck and SC Wiener Neustadt . So the relegation battle was an open race until the end, in which SV Mattersburg also played an increasingly important role. After the penultimate round, the last four teams in the table were within three points, which became a real relegation thriller in the last round, in which the Admira played against Mattersburg. Since the Südstädter won this game and the rivals from Innsbruck and Wiener Neustadt also won, SV Mattersburg, seventh in the table before the game, had to be relegated. So Admira will also play in the Bundesliga in 2013/14.

On June 11, 2013, one day before the start of training, the Admira and coach Didi Kühbauer parted amicably. The successor to the coach who had been in office since April 2010 was taken over by the ÖFB record scorer Toni Polster on June 17th . After Admira had lost the first three games of the season under upholstery, the coach was on leave on August 9, 2013, one day before his fourth Bundesliga game. The previous co-trainer Oliver Lederer became his successor. On October 14, 2013, FC Admira Wacker Mödling was imposed a draconian sentence. After Richard Trenkwalder no longer had the "strength" to run a Bundesliga club for personal reasons and, mainly due to the economic development as a result of the global financial crisis, he sold a large part of his company to the German Droege Group , they started in 2013 the restructuring measures at FC Admira Wacker Mödling. However, since the association was too intertwined with the Trenkwalder company, the "hopefuls", previously known as the "New Group", had to do some extensive work in the background. Only at the beginning of the 2014/15 season were the new managers of the club officially announced. These are business people around the brothers Hubertus and Philip Thonhauser, all from the Mödling district and the surrounding area.

The goal of the eleven new board members is clearly defined: They want to clearly position Admira as the figurehead of the next generation of Austrian footballers and to network it through good contacts in business and politics, especially in the region.

In the first year under the new leadership, Admira began a strong first championship quarter, which was followed by a long dry spell. You were back in the table basement very quickly. After a moderate spring, Admira started an impressive race to catch up in the season finale, a duel to keep the league with SC Wiener Neustadt came to a head. Only in the last lap could the Südstädter, thanks to a victory in Grödig and a simultaneous defeat of the Neustädig, keep the class. Towards the end of the season, Walter Knaller and Admira separated by mutual agreement, while Oliver Lederer was the sole coach responsible for the rest of the season .

For the 2015/16 season Ernst Baumeister was hired as head coach, who from then on looked after the team together with Oliver Lederer. After Admira had been traded as the biggest relegation candidate before the season, the start of the season was surprisingly successful; On September 12, 2015, the team was even able to take the lead in the Bundesliga for the first time since November 2011. On October 17, 2015, Admira lost 8-0 at FC Red Bull Salzburg . This result also marks the highest defeat in the 110-year history of the club. The rest of the 2015/16 season continued to be very successful for Admira. Burić left the club in September 2017. As his successor, sports director Ernst Baumeister took over as coach again. In the 2017/18 season , the club again reached the Europa League qualification with fifth place in the table.

The new Bundesliga mode with twelve teams was introduced at the 2018/19 Austrian Football Championship . Reiner Geyer became the new trainer in October 2018 . The Admira played in the qualifying group and reached tenth place.

On September 2, 2019, Klaus Schmidt was introduced as the new trainer. In January 2020 it was announced that Felix Magath will be the sporting director of Flyeralarm Global Soccer for Admira Wacker Mödling and the Würzburger Kickers . On February 25, 2020, Zvonimir Soldo was signed as the new coach. Admira finished the 2019/20 basic round on March 7, 2020 in ninth place again in the qualification group. Fans

Admira has two active fan clubs, which are located in the north curve of the Südstadt stadium . Since 1995 Admira has been supported by the Südstadt Fanatics, which is the association's oldest and largest fan club in terms of numbers. Gate 2 Admira was founded in 2015, which group is based on the ideals of the ultra-movement and now leads the Admira fan scene. The numerically manageable curve often draws attention to itself through choreographies and pyrotechnics, and both fan groups regularly organize social projects.

There is a rivalry with the Lower Austrian competitor SKN St. Pölten, no official friendships are known.
