Briaucourt is a municipality in the French department of Haute-Saône in the region Bourgogne Franche-Comté .
geography
Briaucourt is located at an altitude of 238 m above sea level, ten kilometers west of Luxeuil-les-Bains and about 24 kilometers north-northeast of the city of Vesoul (as the crow flies). The village extends in the northern part of the department, on the northern edge of the Lanterne valley .
The area of the 9.83 km² municipal area includes a section of the gently undulating landscape in the area of the lantern. From east to west, the area is crossed by the Lanterne alluvial valley , which drains the Saône . In the floodplain, the river draws numerous bends, forms small river islands and has near-natural bank areas. The valley level lies at an average of 235 m and has a width of around two kilometers. It is partly used for agriculture, partly with alluvial forest. At Briaucourt, the lantern receives an inflow from the Rôge .
To the south of the lantern, an approximately 40 m high step leads over to the Bois de Briaucourt plateau (up to 285 m). It is made of red sandstone from the Lower Triassic and is subdivided by the valleys of short side streams of the lantern. To the northwest, the municipality extends to the heights of the Bois du Chanoi (276 m) and the Haut de Molière , on which the highest point of Briaucourt is reached at 294 m. They consist of alternating layers of sandy-marly and calcareous sediments that were deposited during the Lias (Lower Jurassic). The north-western demarcation marks the Semouse, which flows through an alluvial lowland about one kilometer wide.
Neighboring municipalities of Briaucourt are Dampierre-lès-Conflans , Plainemont and Ainvelle in the north, Francalmont in the east, Abelcourt and Velorcey in the south and Conflans-sur-Lanterne in the west.
history
Briaucourt was first mentioned in a document in 1152. In the Middle Ages, the village belonged to the Free County of Burgundy and in it to the area of the Bailliage d'Amont . The local rule was held by the Luxeuil monastery , whose abbot Briaucourt had a wall walled over it in 1340. Together with Franche-Comté , the place finally came to France with the Peace of Nijmegen in 1678.
Attractions
The village church of Saint-Laurent was renovated in the 18th century (choir and chapel) and in the 19th century (nave). It houses an altar from the 17th century, furniture and paintings from the 18th century. The Calvaire dates from the 16th century. To the northeast of the village is a former manor house.

With 239 inhabitants (January 1, 2017), Briaucourt is one of the small communities in the Haute-Saône department. After the population had decreased significantly in the first half of the 20th century (in 1901 there were still 471 people), only slight fluctuations have been recorded since the beginning of the 1960s.
Economy and Infrastructure
Until well into the 20th century, Briaucourt was mainly a village characterized by agriculture (arable farming, fruit growing and cattle breeding) and forestry. Today there are a few local small businesses, including a blacksmith and an embroidery studio. In the last few decades the village has transformed into a residential community. Many workers are therefore commuters who work in the larger towns in the area.
The village is located off the major thoroughfares on a department road that leads from Luxeuil-les-Bains to Conflans-sur-Lanterne. Further road connections exist with Ainvelle and Abelcourt.
