Courmont is a commune in the French department of Haute-Saône in the region Bourgogne Franche-Comté .

geography

Courmont is located at an altitude of 350 m above sea level, 13 kilometers southeast of Lure and about 18 kilometers northwest of the city of Montbéliard (as the crow flies). The village extends in the southern foothills of the Vosges , in the valley of the Ruisseau de Courmont in the hill country between the wooded area Bois de Granges and the Chérimont .

The area of the 6.39 km² large municipal area includes a section in the southern Vosges foothills. The southern and western borders mostly run along the Ruisseau de Courmont , the valley of which is cut more than 100 m deep into the surrounding hill and plateau landscape. In the north and east, its right tributary, the Ruisseau des Terriers , marks the border. The central part of the area is occupied by the wooded heights of the Bois de la Côte de Vézet and the Bois de la Côte Vaudray . These elevations are partly made of red sandstone and partly of Permian layers. At 547 m, the highest point of Courmont is reached at a height in the east of the community area. There is almost only meadowland in the valley meadows.

Courmont includes the farm groups Les Terriers and La Vieille Verrière in the valley of the Ruisseau des Terriers as well as Les Basses Valettes and Les Hautes Valettes on a terrace on the southern slope of the Bois de la Côte Vaudray. Courmont's neighboring municipalities are Lomont and Belverne in the north, Champey in the east, Saulnot in the south and Faymont in the west.

history

In the Middle Ages Courmont belonged to the Granges rule. Together with Franche-Comté , the village finally came to France with the Peace of Nijmegen in 1678. In 1808 Courmont was merged with Lomont, but it got its independence back in 1831.

With 136 inhabitants (January 1, 2017) Courmont is one of the smallest municipalities in the Haute-Saône department. After the population had decreased significantly in the first half of the 20th century (393 people were still counted in 1881), a slight population growth has been recorded again since the beginning of the 1980s.

Economy and Infrastructure

Until well into the 20th century, Courmont was a village dominated by agriculture (arable farming, fruit growing and cattle breeding) and forestry. The residents who work in the village still live mainly from their work in the first sector. Outside the primary sector there are few jobs in the village. Some workers are also commuters who work in the larger towns in the area.

The village is located off the major thoroughfares on a departmental road that leads from Saulnot to Clairegoutte . Another road connection exists with Belverne.
