The 14th World Indoor Athletics Championships took place from March 9th to 11th, 2012 in the Turkish city of Istanbul .
Istanbul was commissioned by the World Athletics Federation (IAAF) to host the event in November 2007 . The Turkish Athletics Association originally applied for the 2010 World Indoor Championships , which were awarded to the Qatari capital Doha . Because of the high quality of Istanbul's candidacy, the members of the IAAF Council decided during their meeting in Monaco to award the 2012 World Indoor Championships early.
616 athletes (349 men and 334 women) from 172 countries announced their participation. 17 athletes (8 women and 9 men) were nominated by the DLV .
