About 40 of the longest trestle bridges Red pog.svg are (500-1600 m) and were railway bridges in North America , of which originated most of the early 20th century. In addition, the design was used for long access roads from high truss bridges from this time, including over the lower reaches of the Mississippi, Missouri, Ohio or Hudson Blue pog.svg(500–3300 m).

The list of the largest trestle bridges includes the world's largest trestle bridges (scaffolding pier viaducts), with structures that are no longer in existence or that have been replaced (table rows with a dark gray background). They were mainly built in the United States and Canada at the time of the expanding railroad companies in North America from the late 19th century . Construction material was initially only wood. With the increase in the weight of the increasingly powerful steam locomotives , wrought iron and steel were also used later . Eventually, with the development of the steel industry, large trestle bridges were built using only steel. With this transition, the design of trestle bridges also changed. The wooden structures were mostly constructed from an even sequence of interconnected, scaffold-like supports (trestles) and the iron and steel structures mostly from a sequence of separate scaffold pillars or lattice masts . In addition to simple wooden beams , wooden structures u. a. for the superstructure also by William Howe named Howe truss used in which the loaded train to vertical since the 1840s pursuit iron bars already been used. In the case of metal structures, the superstructure usually consists of a sequence of parallel- chorded lattice girders or solid wall girders , whereby the length of the individual girders between the pillars ( span ) is usually greater than the length of the girders on the pillars (in the following schematic illustration however, the spans are shown the same size).

Trestle bridges were used for large railway bridges until the late 1930s, but were eventually replaced by other supporting structures ; the last large steel trestle bridges were built in the 1960s in the province of Alberta in Canada ( Meikle River Trestle 1963 and Wapiti River Trestle 1969). Alberta is home to the Lethbridge Viaduct from 1907, the largest trestle bridge in the world, with a length of over 1.6 kilometers and a height of almost 100 meters. The highest trestle bridge for rail traffic was the Viaducto del Loa (103 m) built in Chile in 1888 and the Thomas Creek Bridge from 1961 in the US state of Oregon is the highest road bridge of this type at 105 meters (the list can be found in Sort table header accordingly, sorting according to the length of the structures is preset.

In addition to trestle bridges as independent structures, the design was also used for approach bridges of high truss bridges and the like. a. used over the lower reaches of the Mississippi River , Missouri River , Ohio River or Hudson River , which here mostly span the extensive floodplains of the rivers (second table). The three-kilometer east access to the Huey P. Long Bridge (1935) in Jefferson Parish in Louisiana is the largest construction with a final height of almost 50 meters. The largest trestle bridge in Germany is the almost 1.3 kilometer long north access to the 68 meter high Rendsburg high bridge (1913) in Schleswig-Holstein .

criteria

Since the transitions from the mostly low yoke bridge to the trestle bridge and from the latter to other supporting structures with large spans are partly fluid and there is no clear definition for delimitation in the literature, the tables were based on the following criteria:

Trestle bridges as independent structures
The structures have a total length of at least 200 meters and a height of at least 20 meters (track or street level). They are mostly designed as trestle bridges, but deviating from this, they can have one or more longer girders with a span of about 100 meters , which are usually designed as lattice girders; lengths of up to 300  ft (91  m ) for railway bridges and up to 371 ft (113 m) for road bridges were realized. Furthermore, in the case of bridges with separate scaffolding piers or lattice masts, individual girders or parts of a girder must clearly span them (however, individual piers of other types can occur); Bridges are demarcated here with scaffold pillars that taper upwards on all sides, on which only the ends of the respective girders meet or which carry longer multi -span girders (examples here are the main bridge of the Poughkeepsie Bridge , the Viaduc de Busseau or the Malleco Viaduct ).
Trestle bridges as part of other bridge types
In addition to the above-mentioned execution criteria, at least one driveway to the main bridge must have a length of at least 200 meters and a final height of at least 20 meters (track or street level).

Due to the large number of trestle bridges that have been erected, the list cannot claim to be complete, although the good documentation of the particularly long and tall structures means that the list is almost completely complete. In the case of shorter bridges, only those were included for which at least the length, height and time of construction could be determined from literature or trustworthy internet sources; continuous completion is sought.

  • Name: Name of the bridge according to the lemma in the German Wikipedia .
  • bridged: Name of the river or valley or canyon that the bridge spans. If the valley does not have a name, it is marked with N / A ( not available ).
  • Length: total length of the bridge between the abutments . If the exact length is not given in the sources, it is marked as approximate with approx. (Partly determined with the distance measurement on Google Maps ).
  • Span: Longest span between the load-bearing elements such as abutments or bridge piers. In the case of wooden trestle bridges with a continuous construction, this information does not make sense and is marked with N / A (not applicable).
  • Height: Height of the bridge, i. d. Usually the height of the track or street level above the lowest point of the valley or above the water surface.
  • Material: material of the load-bearing structural elements of the bridge. In the case of combinations of several materials, an addition is given in square brackets (material from previous or subsequent buildings in round brackets).
  • Completion: year of completion of the bridge. Planning and construction can start several years earlier. In the case of conversions or extensions as well as later new buildings, the year of the original construction or the new building is given in brackets (the sorting is done here according to the first trestle bridge).
  • Decommissioning / demolition: year the bridge was decommissioned. If the construction was later torn down or filled in and therefore no longer exists, this year is indicated and the line is highlighted in dark gray.
  • Use / status: (Original) use as a railway bridge , road bridge (partly as a combination of both traffic routes) or aqueduct or drainage channel ( flume ). If former railway or road bridges have been converted for the use of cycle paths or footpaths, this is also indicated in brackets
  • Location: Closest city or region where the bridge was constructed, including state or state.
  • Coord .: Coordinates of the bridge
  • Country: The corresponding country in ISO-3166-ALPHA-3 code.

The information on bridges that do not yet have an article in the German-language Wikipedia is referenced by the individual records listed under Name .

Development of the US rail network ( track miles )

The graphic below shows the number of trestle bridges completed annually from the data listed above, whereby the year of the first construction is included here, even if a later new construction was carried out at the same location using a comparable construction made of a different material.

Since over 90 percent of all large trestle bridges for rail traffic worldwide, most of them in the USA, the increase in the 1880s and 1900s can be attributed to the increased expansion of the rail network in the USA, which in 1916 with a total of over 400,000 kilometers of track (254,000 track miles ) reached its greatest extent. With the First World War 1914–1918 (the United States entered the war in 1917) and the subsequent global economic crisis in the 1930s, expansion came to a standstill. The emergence of motorized private transport ultimately led to the closure of many unprofitable routes. As reinforced concrete bridges were predominantly used for the expansion of the road network , only a few large trestle bridges were built worldwide until the 1960s; the last over 600 meters in Canada were the Meikle River Trestle (Great Slave Lake Railway, 1963) and the Wapiti River Trestle (Alberta Resources Railway, 1969).

Annually completed trestle bridges (min. 200 m length and 20 m height)

Trestle bridges as part of other bridge types

The list shows only a selection of existing large trestle bridges that were built as access points to main bridges of other supporting structures and that meet the criteria mentioned above.

  • Name: Name of the bridge according to the lemma in the German Wikipedia .
  • bridged: Name of the river or valley or canyon that the bridge spans.
  • Bridge type : design of the main bridge.
  • Total length: total length of the bridge between the abutments .
  • Span: Longest span of the main bridge between the load-bearing elements such as abutments or bridge piers.
  • Height: Height of the bridge, i. d. Usually the height of the track or street level above the lowest point of the valley or above the water surface.
  • Access-1 or 2: length of the access to the main bridge. If the exact length is not given in the sources, it will be marked as approximate as approx. (Partly determined with the distance measurement on Google Maps ).
  • Material: material of the load-bearing structural elements of the bridge. In the case of combinations of several materials, an addition is given in square brackets (material from previous or subsequent buildings in round brackets).
  • Completion: year of completion of the bridge. Planning and construction can start several years earlier. In the case of conversions or extensions as well as later new buildings, the year of the original construction or the new building is given in brackets.
  • Use / status: Use as a railway bridge , road bridge or a combination of both traffic routes.
  • Location: Closest city or region where the bridge was constructed and the corresponding state or state.
  • Coord .: Coordinates of the bridge
  • Country: The corresponding country in ISO-3166-ALPHA-3 code.

The information on bridges that do not yet have an article in the German-language Wikipedia is referenced by the individual records listed under Name .
