Waabs ( Danish : Vabs , historically also Vabenæs , Low German : Woobs ) is a municipality in the district of Rendsburg-Eckernförde in Schleswig-Holstein . It consists of the villages Kleinwaabs (dä: Vabs ), Großwaabs ( Store Vabs ) and Langholz ( Langskov ) and includes the settlements and farms Aschenberg ( Askbjerg ), Booknis ( Bognæs or Bøgenæs ), Hökholz ( Høgholt ), Hülsenhain ( Hylsenhain ), Karlsminde, Lehmberg ( Lembjerg ), Ludwigsburg ( Ludvigsborg or Kohøved ), Neuschlag, Sophienhof, Ritenrade, Rothensande and Waabshof as well as Gast and Glasholz.

Geography and traffic

Waabs is about 10 km northeast of Eckernförde on the Eckernförde Bay on the Schwansen peninsula . According to the mostly common definition of demarcation, the Eckernförde Bay begins at Booknis-Eck within the municipality. The Schwansenstraße runs from Kappeln to Eckernförde to the west of Waabs . The municipality of Waabs has around 12 km of natural beaches with a number of campsites. The Aassee lies in the municipality .

history

The numerous megalithic tombs in the municipality indicate the long history of the settlement . The 57 m long barn bed of Waabs-Karlsminde , which was built in the Neolithic Age and restored in 1976-78, is open to the public as an archaeological monument. The Langholz dolmen , the long beds of Rothensande and the Sophienhof dolmen are further examples.

Waabs was first mentioned in 1382 as tho der Grøten Wopensee , later also under the names Wapenisse (1462), Wapendsee (1481) and Waabskirch (1641). The name is a combination of the old Danish wāpæn (ndän. Våben , cf. Old Norse vápn ) for weapon , coat of arms and adän. -næs ( nd. nis ) for headland , whereby the meaning of wāpæn is left open . Langholz was mentioned as Langholt in 1652 and means something like long wood . Hökholz was mentioned as Höckholz in 1804/05 . The part of the name Höck refers to Danish. høg for hawk . The place name therefore means forest, wood, where there are hawks . Langholz was first mentioned in 1652.

On September 30, 1928, the six estate districts of Hökholz, Karlsminde, Ludwigsburg, Sophienhof, Waabs and Waabshof were merged to form the municipality of Waabs in their current size.

Gut Ludwigsburg

The manor house of Gut Ludwigsburg (originally Gutes Kohøved (Danish: "Kuhhof")) lies in a moat system, as it was built on the foundations of a medieval moated castle. It is said to have been an episcopal fief with a manor and a village in the Middle Ages, but it was first mentioned in 1396 as a knightly possession. In the 18th century it was owned by Count Friedrich Ludwig von Dehn (1697–1771), the appointed governor of Schleswig-Holstein.

Today's baroque mansion with its gardens was built for Ludwig von Dehn at the beginning of the 18th century, who also renamed the court Ludwigsburg . Particularly noteworthy is the colorful chamber with its baroque room decorations. In addition, rooms in the manor house such as the Golden Hall and the vaulted cellar can be used for weddings and other celebrations.

Today there is a riding stables on which Trakehners, Arabs, Holsteiners and German riding ponies are bred, a farm shop and a café on the estate.

Marienkirche

The oldest parts of today's church in Waabs originate from the Gothic and received its present form in 1608 through the construction of the tower at the end of the 16th century and the arching of the nave with three cross-ribbed vaults. The church is home to some notable works of art, such as a number of Gothic wooden sculptures. They are probably remnants of a large Marian altar created around 1460. The carved altar is a work of the 17th century. In addition to the wooden baptism from 1674, the early Gothic baptismal font made of Gotland limestone has been used again for several years. The carved pulpit was created in 1600 by Jürgen Koberch, a master carver at the Eckernförde carving school. The remaining parts of the Rantzaugestuhl from the years 1580/90 and 1608 with carved coats of arms and ancestral tables are also worth seeing. Late Gothic wall paintings show depictions of the twelve apostles and the Last Judgment , framed by acanthus leaves and thistle blossoms , symbolizing the martyrdom of Christ . Around 1900 the paintings were heavily revised, whitened in 1968 and most of them exposed again in 2011. The restoration of the frescoes should be finished in 2018. The church received an organ at the beginning of the 17th century. Over the centuries the church tower had leaned north. Wall cracks and wood worms were added. In 2014 an emergency backup took place, in 2017 further structural restoration measures followed. In 1997, the Friends of Marienkirche Waabs e. V. founded.
