List of the Vosges passes
The following passes of the Vosges on main, secondary and forest roads are listed from north to south. The northernmost is the Col du Klingenfels on the German-French border ( Palatinate Forest ) and the southernmost is the Col des Chevrères and is located in Bourgogne-Franche-Comté in the Haute-Saône department . The highest pass is the Col de Falimont ( 1270 m ), a path below the third highest peak in the Vosges, the Hohneck ( 1363 m ). The lowest is the Col de Goetzenberg in the Bas-Rhin department at 289 meters in the Wasigenstein Forest not far from Schönau (Palatinate) .
Vosges pass roads
The Col de Goetzenberg is the lowest at 289 meters and the highest of the Col de Hahnenbrunnen at 1186 meters. The passes that have been crossed since ancient times are limited to three historical trade and traffic routes, which were popularly known as the “German road” (Route d'Allemagne), later the “Alsatian road” (Route d'Alsace). They went down in history as natural passes through the Vosges :
- Col du Donon
- Col du Bonhomme
- Col de Bussang
The Zaberner Steige also belongs to this list , although it is not a pass in the strictest sense. But since Roman times it has taken on a passport function between Lorraine and Alsace , because the Vosges massif is the fastest to cross at this point despite the rocky slope in the east. In addition, the path is on the direct Paris - Strasbourg connection .
Passes on forest and forest roads
Numerous passes of the Vosges can only be reached to a limited extent by vehicle. Depending on the department and municipality, traffic on the forest roads is permitted. As a rule, they are opened to through traffic between 6 a.m. and 8 p.m. with a speed limit. In some parts of the higher southern Vosges they serve as communal back roads to connect remote side valleys or to get to the alpine pastures. These back roads are sometimes former mule tracks that have been paved. The lowest pass on this list is the Groß Dunkeltaler Hals with a height of 291 meters. At 1195 meters, the Col de Lauchen is the highest.
Passes on forest paths or mule tracks
The highest of the passes, which can be reached via forest or hiking trails, is the Col de Falimont ( 1270 m ) in the Vosges department and the lowest is the Kachler Hals ( 295 m ) in the Moselle department.
