Women Men

The ice hockey tournament of the men at the 2002 Winter Olympics in Salt Lake City took place from 9 to 24 February with 14 teams - and as many as in the Games in Nagano - in the surrounding towns West Valley City and Provo in the state of Utah held . Of the 35 games, 23 took place at The E Center in West Valley City with a capacity of 8,599, all others were played in the 8,000-seat Peaks Ice Arena in Provo.

For the men's tournament, as in Nagano in 1998, negotiations between the International Olympic Committee (IOC) and the International Ice Hockey Federation (IIHF) with the North American professional league National Hockey League (NHL) ensured that the NHL for the time of the Winter Games from February 14th to 25th took a break in the 2001/02 season . In return, the big six ice hockey nations were set for the final round and only had to intervene in the action a week later.

Canada secured the Olympic victory for the first time since the 1952 Winter Olympics with a 5-2 final victory over the USA and thus ended the 50-year dry spell. Russia achieved third place and bronze with a 7-2 victory in the brotherly duel against Belarus .

qualification

The first six nations of the 1998 Winter Olympics in Nagano qualified for the tournament . In addition, the two best-placed teams at the A World Cup in 1999 that had not already qualified through the Winter Olympics were added. In addition, six participants were played in several qualifying tournaments.

The following qualified six teams at the 1998 Winter Olympics:

The 14 teams of the Olympic ice hockey tournament completed a tournament divided into two phases - preliminary and intermediate round - as the six best nations of the A-World Cup in 1999 had already been placed for the intermediate round and only entered the intermediate round six days after the start of the tournament.

Initially, Slovakia and Switzerland completed the preliminary round in two groups of four teams with the six qualifiers in seventh and eighth place in the 1999 World Cup. The two group winners were the only ones to reach the intermediate round, while the six eliminated teams played out the final placements in direct duels for places 9 to 14 according to their placement in the group. In the preliminary round, the two groups were composed according to the positions of the national teams at the 1999 World Cup according to the following key:

Group A Group B
A1 (1) B1 (2)
A2 (4) B2 (3)
A3 (5) B3 (6)
A4 (8) B4 (7)

AustriaAustria Austria (10) Belarus 1995Belarus Belarus (9)
LatviaLatvia Latvia (11) UkraineUkraine Ukraine (14)
GermanyGermany Germany (20) FranceFrance France (15)

The six teams seeded in the intermediate round finished in first three places in intermediate round groups C and D according to their placement at the 1998 Winter Olympics in Nagano . Thus, defending champion Czech Republic was the group leader in group C and the losing team Russia was at the top of group D. In addition, there were the two qualifiers from the preliminary round, so that again two groups with four teams each were formed. This ultimately resulted in the following groupings:

Group C Group D
C1 (1) D1 (2)
C2 (4) D2 (3)
C3 (5) D3 (6)
Winner Group A (Q2) Winner Group B (Q1)

SwedenSweden Sweden (5) United StatesUnited States USA (6)
GermanyGermany Germany (20) Belarus 1995Belarus Belarus (9)

Within the two groups, the teams initially played according to the everyone-versus-everyone mode , so that each team initially played three games. However, since no team was eliminated, the intermediate round was only used to determine the games for the quarter-finals. There the teams played cross-wise, so that the two group winners each met the fourth placed in the other group. Likewise, the second and third placed played against each other crosswise. The four victorious teams met in the semi-finals, with the winners playing the final for the gold medal and the losers the game for the bronze medal. Further placement games were not played.
