Karim Mostafa Benzema (born December 19, 1987 in Lyon ) is a French football player of Algerian origin. Since 2009 he has been under contract with the Spanish record champions Real Madrid in the Primera División .

Club history

Olympique Lyon

Benzema was pulled up from the youth of Olympique Lyon to the first team in 2004 during the current season and made his league debut on January 15, 2005 against FC Metz . Even before his first league goal against AC Ajaccio on March 4, 2006, he scored his first European Cup goal in the Champions League game against Rosenborg Trondheim on December 6, 2005. On March 13, 2008, he extended his contract to 2013 with the option for another season.

In the 2007/08 season Benzema and his team won the French championship for the fourth time in a row. Although he suffered from a torn knee ligament from March to April 2008, he was one of the regular players. With 20 goals in 30 games, he was the top scorer in Ligue 1 . On May 11, 2008, he was voted "Footballer of the Year" by his professional colleagues in France's Ligue 1.

real Madrid

Benzema moved to Real Madrid in July 2009 . The transfer fee initially amounted to 35 million euros. He signed a six-year contract until June 30, 2015. He made his debut on August 29, 2009 against Deportivo La Coruña . He scored his first competitive goal on September 20, 2009 in the home game against Deportivo Xerez , which Real Madrid won 5-0. In the 2009/10 and 2010/11 seasons he was mostly in the shadow of his teammates Cristiano Ronaldo and Gonzalo Higuaín . It was only in the second half of the 2010/11 season that he was able to convince consistently for the first time after he had received Higuaín's regular place in the storm due to a herniated disc. In the 2011/12 season Benzema was able to maintain this regular position and contributed to winning the Spanish championship with 21 league goals. He was then named France Footballer of the Year by France Football magazine in 2011 and 2012 . In the 2013/14 season Benzema won the Spanish Cup for the second time with Real Madrid and the UEFA Champions League for the first time . He was then voted France's Footballer of the Year for the third time.

Before the 2014/15 season , Benzema extended his contract until 2019. Under his compatriot Zinédine Zidane as coach, between 2016 and 2018 he won the UEFA Champions League , a championship, a Supercopa and twice the FIFA club with Real Madrid. Won the World Cup and the UEFA Super Cup . He defended his regular place especially in the 2016/17 season despite the commitment of the storm talent Álvaro Morata . After Morata's move to Chelsea and another contract extension until 2021, Benzema was unrivaled in the 2017/18 season , but only scored five goals in 32 league games and thus came under fire. He saved the season with important goals in the Champions League : a brace against Bayern Munich in the semi-final second leg and the leading goal against Liverpool in the final. He won this competition for the fourth time.

National team

Benzema for France 2012

On March 28, 2007 Karim Benzema made his debut in the French senior team . In the 1-0 win over Austria he scored the only goal of the game.

At the European Championship finals in 2008 he was part of the French squad . In the first disappointing group game against Romania , Benzema played 78 minutes before Samir Nasri came on for him . In the 1: 4 defeat against the Netherlands , he was not on the field. In the decisive group game against world champions Italy Benzema played through, but could not set any decisive accents.

For the 2010 FIFA World Cup , he was not nominated for a weak season at Real Madrid. However, the new national coach Laurent Blanc also relied on Benzema to rebuild the national team.

On May 14, 2014, he was appointed to the squad of the French national team for the 2014 World Cup by Blanc's successor Didier Deschamps . Benzema scored two goals in the first group game against Honduras (3-0). He also scored one goal in the subsequent 5-2 win against Switzerland and provided the templates for two more goals. In both games he was voted Man of the Match . Benzema reached the quarter-finals with France, in which his team was eliminated against the eventual title winner Germany.

In 2015 he played his last international match for the time being because of his suspected involvement in an attempted blackmail (in the "Sextape Affair"; see the section " Proceedings due to attempted blackmail " below). In autumn 2017 France Football campaigned for his return to the Bleus ; the trade journal argued that Benzema is still clearly the best and most successful active striker in France in the club, would like to wear the blue dress again, the judiciary has meanwhile "whitewashed him, so to speak" and association president Noël Le Graët now considers his consideration to be acceptable again - alone National coach Deschamps is not ready to jump over his shadow on this issue. In October 2019, Deschamps confirmed that Benzema would not return to the national team as long as he was national coach.

Controversy

Charged with sex with an underage prostitute

Benzema was accused in France of having sex with an underage prostitute (punishable under Article 225-12-1 of the Code pénal ) in a Munich hotel in 2009 . His national team colleague Franck Ribéry and his brother-in-law were also accused for the same reason . In contrast to Ribéry, he denied any sexual contact with the person concerned. The criminal case was concluded in January 2014 after an interruption of several months. All three men were acquitted, as none of them could be proven - also in the opinion of the public prosecutor - that they were aware of the prostitutes' minority.

Attempted extortion proceedings

In October 2015, Benzema was brought before an examining magistrate about an attempt to blackmail his French national team colleague Mathieu Valbuena with a sex video . On November 5, 2015, Benzema was charged with "complicity in an attempt at extortion and involvement in a criminal organization" and was prohibited by a court order from all contact with Valbuena.

On December 11, 2015 Benzema was excluded from the national team by the French Football Association until further notice.
