The Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Portland in Oregon ( Latin Archidioecesis Portlandensis in Oregon , English Archdiocese of Portland in Oregon ) is one in the United States located Roman Catholic archdiocese , based in Portland , Oregon .

Cathedral Immaculate Conception in Portland

history

The Archdiocese of Portland in Oregon was on December 1, 1843 by Pope Gregory XVI. established from cession of territory by the diocese of Saint Louis as Vicariate Apostolic Oregon . On July 24, 1846, the Vicariate Apostolic Oregon gave parts of its territory to establish the dioceses of Vancouver Island and Walla Walla .

The Vicariate Apostolic Oregon was on July 24, 1846 by Pope Pius IX. raised to the diocese and renamed the diocese of Oregon City . On July 29, 1850, the Diocese of Oregon City was by Pius IX. raised to the archbishopric. The Archdiocese of Oregon City gave up on March 3, 1868 parts of its territory to establish the Vicariate Apostolic Idaho and Montana . Another assignment took place on June 19, 1903 to establish the bishopric of Baker City . On September 26, 1928, the Archdiocese of Oregon City was renamed the Archdiocese of Portland, Oregon .
