John Millson (1859)

John Singleton Millson (born October 1, 1808 in Norfolk , Virginia , †  March 1, 1874 ibid) was an American politician . Between 1849 and 1861 he represented the state of Virginia in the US House of Representatives .

Career

John Millson enjoyed an academic education. After a subsequent law degree and his admission as a lawyer in 1829, he began to work in Norfolk in this profession. At the same time he embarked on a political career as a member of the Democratic Party . In the congressional elections of 1848 Millson was elected to the US House of Representatives in Washington, DC in the first constituency of Virginia , where he succeeded Archibald Atkinson on March 4, 1849 . After five re-elections, he was able to complete six legislative terms in Congress by March 3, 1861 . These were shaped by the events leading up to the civil war .

Since 1853 Millson represented the second district of his state as the successor to Richard Kidder Meade . From 1851 to 1853 he was chairman of the Committee on Revolutionary Pensions . Since the state of Virginia left the Union in early 1861, John Millson's seat in Congress was no longer occupied. It was not until 1870 that the second seat of Virginia was reoccupied with the Republican James H. Platt .

After his time in the US House of Representatives, John Millson practiced law again. He died on March 1, 1874 in his hometown of Norfolk.
