Romania took part in the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro . It was the 21st participation in the Summer Olympics. The Comitetul Olimpic și Sportiv Român nominated 95 athletes in 14 sports. The flag-bearer at the opening ceremony was the gymnast Cătălina Ponor , the fencing Olympic champion Simona Pop was selectedfor the closing ceremony.
