The 1988 Winter Olympics took place in Calgary , Canada . The Olympic ice hockey tournament was held from February 13th to 28th. Twelve teams took part in this tournament.
In addition to hosts Canada and the seven other teams from the past A World Championships , the three best-placed teams in Group B were also eligible to participate. The last starting place was played out in a qualification between the B group fourth and the winner of the C group.
Compared to the previous Olympic tournament, the final round was expanded from four to six teams, so that the two third-placed teams in the two preliminary round groups also played for the medals. The fourth, fifth and sixth placed then played the further placements in a direct comparison. The TV broadcasters succeeded in ensuring that in the placement round, instead of the planned, from their point of view "unattractive morning match" between Canada and Germany on February 24, the Canadians could only play on the evening of that day against the Soviet Union and on February 26 had to play the match against the FRG. Finland fell by the wayside with its protest threats, and Germany's coach Xaver Nonsense spoke of "distorting competition".
The tournament was overshadowed by a doping case when the Polish player Jarosław Morawiecki tested positive after the game against France. Moraviecki was suspended and Poland lost the game with 2-0 points and 2-2 goals. In contrast, the actual result of 2: 6 remained valid for France.
As usual, the team from the USSR won their seventh gold medal at this tournament and became the sole record Olympic champion. The dethroned Canadians, on the other hand, could not use their home advantage and remained without a medal. The silver medal was surprising for the Finns , who were able to win their first medal at a major tournament (Olympic tournament or world championship), but also benefited from winning their final match against the already established Olympic champion. In addition to host Canada, the Czechoslovaks caused another tournament disappointment when they achieved their worst Olympic placement since 1928 with sixth place.
