Włodzimierz Leonard Lubański (born February 28, 1947 in Gliwice - Sośnica ) is a former Polish football player .
In his career he played with KS Sośnica Gliwice , GKS Gliwice , Górnik Zabrze . By 1974 he was a record Polish national player with 75 games and 48 goals scored. In the years 1966-1969 Lubański was in four seasons in a row top scorer in the Polish league with 23, 18, 24 and 22 goals.
In 1972 he took part in the Summer Olympic Games in Munich , in which he was the captain of the Polish team and won the gold medal. With Górnik Zabrze Lubański won the Polish championship seven times (1963–1967, 1971–1972) and six times the national cup (1965, 1968–1972). In 1972 he was named Footballer of the Year by the newspaper Sport . In the same year he took seventh place in the election for European Footballer of the Year .
In 1973 Lubański became the most tragic figure in the history of Polish football when his career, which had been developing excellently until then , was shaken by a rude foul in the World Cup qualifier against England and the resulting cruciate ligament rupture . Poland won the match in Chorzów 2-0 and Lubański was one of the top scorers. After a 1: 1 in the second leg at Wembley Stadium , which at the time was rated as epic , Poland eliminated the 1966 title holder and sensationally qualified for the 1974 World Cup in Germany, where the Polish team first left Italy and Argentina behind, Sweden and Germany Eliminated Yugoslavia, but missed the finals in a wet game against the hosts. In the game for third place they prevailed against defending champions Brazil.
Lubański made a comeback later, but never reached the previous strength. It was not until 1977 that he returned to the Polish national soccer team and took part in the 1978 World Cup. In the qualifying game against Denmark (Chorzów 1977) he waived a safe goal so as not to endanger the Danish goalkeeper. For this he was honored with the Fair Play Prize from UNESCO . At that time he was already playing at KSC Lokeren in Belgium , where he later worked as an assistant coach.
Włodzimierz Lubański was appointed to both the European and the world selection. Lubański, along with players like Zbigniew Boniek , Jerzy Gorgoń , Grzegorz Lato , Ernst Willimowski , the official footballer of the century Kazimierz Deyna and goalkeeper Jan Tomaszewski, can be counted among the best players in Polish football.
