.ru is the country-specific top-level domain (ccTLD) for Russia . It has existed since April 7, 1994 and is administered by the so-called Coordination Center for TLD RU (also called RU-CENTER).

Soviet Union

The organization is not only responsible for .ru, but also for assigning the top-level domain .su , which was intended for the former Soviet Union and is now operated in parallel with .ru. ICANN has repeatedly made attempts to dissolve the top-level domain .su, which the registry has so far explicitly rejected. Because the top-level domain of the former Soviet Union continues to find buyers, especially in Germany. In addition to .ru, there is also the alternative ending .рф as an abbreviation of Российская Федерация ( Rossijskaja Federazija , Russian Federation).

second level

In addition to .ru and .su, there are the following domains on the second level :

  • .ac.ru - scientific institutions and universities
  • .org.ru - non-commercial organizations
  • .com.ru - commercial organizations
  • .int.ru - international organizations
  • .edu.ru - educational institutions
  • .gov.ru - Russia's government
  • .mil.ru - the Russian military
  • .net.ru - Internet provider
  • .pp.ru - private individuals

properties

To register a .ru domain, it is necessary to submit an extract from the commercial register or a copy of your identity card . A place of residence or a branch in Russia is not necessary, however, every natural or legal person can register a domain. This can be between three and 63 characters long; registration usually takes two to three days.

In 2010, Russia was among the first four countries to introduce an internationalized top-level domain. The registration of domains with Cyrillic letters is possible below .рф and .ru, but only a few international registrars have already implemented this.

Network blocking

In November 2012, the top-level domain .ru came under fire after the so-called Register of Domain Names was created to enable the state to intervene in the practice of the registry . The register was part of a comprehensive change in the law with which Russia established so-called network blocks . The list of unauthorized .ru domains is kept by the Roskomnadzor organization, which is subordinate to the Ministry of Communications and Mass Communication .
