About this picture

The Diocese of Magdeburg ( Latin Dioecesis Magdeburgensis ) is a Roman Catholic diocese in Saxony-Anhalt and was established in 1994. Except for a border alignment with Thuringia, the diocese borders follow the borders of the state of Saxony-Anhalt, as they existed from 1947 to 1952, in contrast to the present state. Parts of the diocese therefore belong to the federal states of Brandenburg and Saxony today . Bishop's Church is the Saint Sebastian Cathedral in Magdeburg . A characteristic of the diocese is its situation in the diaspora .

Emerged is from the Lower Saxon Circle belonging archbishopric of Magdeburg , which as a result of the Peace of Westphalia with the death of the archbishop and Saxon administrator Herzog August 1680 dissolved.

The diocese has a budget of around 28 million euros p. a., of which 10 million from church taxes , 10 million from other German dioceses and four million from funds from the state of Saxony-Anhalt.

history

Announcement of the establishment of an archdiocese of Magdeburg and its transfer to Adalbert , 968

Archdiocese of Magdeburg

At the Synod of Ravenna in 967, the Roman-German King Otto I obtained the approval of Pope John XIII. for the elevation of Magdeburg to the archbishopric . In March 968 Otto was able to implement the synod's resolution. The Archdiocese of Magdeburg was created from areas of the Dioceses of Halberstadt and Merseburg . The cathedral church was the Magdeburg Cathedral . In the Peace of Westphalia of 1648, the territory of the Archbishopric of Magdeburg , i.e. the secular property of the Archbishop of Magdeburg, was assigned to the Electorate of Brandenburg as the hereditary Duchy of Magdeburg . This provision came into effect after the death of the last administrator, Duke August von Sachsen-Weißenfels in 1680.

Episcopal Commissariat Magdeburg in the Diocese of Paderborn

With the bull De salute animarum in 1821, most of the former Archdiocese of Magdeburg was assigned to the Diocese of Paderborn . Since 1834 the territorially separate eastern part of the Diocese of Paderborn has been known as the "Bishop's Commissariat Magdeburg". The clergy appointed provost of the Sankt Sebastian Church were also given the office of "Episcopal Commissarius" for the eastern part of the diocese, so u. a. Kaspar Friedrich Brieden (1889–1901), Franz Schauerte (1901–1909), Petrus Legge (1924–1932).

Archbishop's Commissariat Magdeburg in the Archdiocese of Paderborn

As a result of the elevation of the diocese of Paderborn to the archbishopric in 1930, the name was adapted and read from then on "Archbishop's Commissariat Magdeburg".

While this area was regarded as a diaspora with a low proportion of Catholics among the population until 1945 , after the war there was a regional increase in Catholics due to the settlement of expellees from Silesia and the Sudetenland. However, the anti-clerical system of the GDR made the church administration of this area increasingly difficult. The Archbishop of Paderborn therefore installed auxiliary bishops after the war for the existing office of Episcopal Commissioner in Magdeburg, such as Wilhelm Weskamm (1949–1951), Friedrich Maria Rintelen (from 1952) and Johannes Braun (from 1970/1971).

Episcopal Office Magdeburg

Finally, on July 23, 1973, an institution called the "Episcopal Office" was set up, the jurisdiction of which was transferred to the Bishop and Apostolic Administrator in Magdeburg, Johannes Braun . This Episcopal office belonged officially to the archdiocese of Paderborn and the Apostolic Administrator was therefore only as auxiliary bishop there working, but it became de facto an independent diocese. After the resignation of Bishop Braun, the head of the pastoral care office in Magdeburg, Leo Nowak , was appointed Apostolic Administrator in 1990.

St. Sebastian in Magdeburg, main church of the Archbishop's Commissariat since 1949. When the diocese was founded in 1994, it was elevated to the status of a bishop's church.

Diocese of Magdeburg

Today's diocese of Magdeburg was separated from the Archdiocese of Paderborn by Pope John Paul II with the Apostolic Constitution Cum Gaudio , which is dated June 27, 1994, with effect from July 8 of the same year and raised to an independent diocese and also a suffragan diocese assigned to the church province of Paderborn . The then Apostolic Administrator in Magdeburg, Bishop Leo Nowak, was appointed the first bishop of the diocese.

With the Apostolic Letter Sanctum Norbertum , John Paul II confirmed on July 12, 1994 St. Norbert von Xanten , St. Mauritius and St. Gertrud von Helfta as patrons of the diocese .

On March 17, 2004, Bishop Leo Nowak resigned from the episcopate due to old age. Auxiliary Bishop Dr. Gerhard Feige , who headed the affairs of the diocese as diocesan administrator during the sedis vacancy , was appointed by the Pope as the new bishop of Magdeburg on February 23, 2005. He was introduced to his office on April 16, 2005 in the Episcopal Church of St. Sebastian in Magdeburg.

As part of the family pilgrimage of the Diocese of Magdeburg to Huysburg on September 4, 2005, Bishop Gerhard Feige gave the starting signal for the formation of 44 community associations . The previous parishes , vicariates and curatios should grow together in a process by 2010 at the latest and then be raised to new parishes (parish merger ).

On May 2, 2010, Bishop Feige dissolved numerous parishes, parish vicarages and curaties and established 25 new parishes. The remaining new installations followed in the course of 2010.

Diocesan patron and diocesan calendar

The patron saint of the diocese of Magdeburg is Saint Norbert von Xanten . Co-patrons are Saint Mauritius and Saint Gertrude .

In the diocese of Magdeburg, the regional calendar for the German-speaking area is supplemented by the following celebrations (followed by the rank):

Abbreviations: H = high festival, F = festival, G = mandatory day of remembrance, g = non-mandatory day of remembrance, RK = regional calendar for the German-speaking area

Church closings

Development of membership numbers
Holy Spirit Church in Greppin

Economic constraints due to a decline in church tax revenues, a shortage of priests and a decline in the number of practicing Catholics in the Magdeburg diocese lead to the fact that, on the one hand, parishes are merged into larger parishes, but on the other, churches are also closed . In some cases, the premises of the Protestant church are also used.
