After studying law and being admitted to the bar in 1879, he began to work in this profession in Louisburg . He later moved his residence and law firm to Raleigh . In 1887 he was ordained a clergyman in the Baptist Church.
Politically, Martin joined the Populist Party . In the congressional elections of 1894 he was defeated by the Democrat James A. Lockhart . However, Martin appealed against the outcome of the election. After this was granted, he took over on June 5, 1896 the mandate previously exercised by Lockhart. After re-election in November 1896, he could remain in Congress until March 3, 1899. During this time the Spanish-American War of 1898 fell . In 1898, Martin decided not to run again. He withdrew from politics and worked as a clergyman in Polkton. He died there on April 19, 1931.
