Marita Sandy
Marita Sandig (born April 4, 1958 in Lichtenstein , after marrying Gasch ) is a former rower from the German Democratic Republic . In 1980 she won the Olympic gold medal in eighth place .
Marita Sandig took second place in the four and eight at the 1975 Spartakiade and was GDR junior champion in 1976. The rower from SC DHfK Leipzig moved up to the GDR eighth in 1977, which was completely reorganized after the 1976 Olympic victory. This young eighth won the world championship straight away. In the following year, Sandig and Kersten Neisser moved from the world champion boat to the Leipzig four with helmswoman and she won the world championship title straight away in this boat class. The following year, the foursome finished second behind the Soviet boat at the World Cup.
At the 1980 Olympic Games in Moscow, Sandig and Neisser were back in eighth position, while Martina Boesler , Kersten Neisser, Christiane Köpke , Birgit Schütz , Gabriele Kühn , Ilona Richter , Marita Sandig, Karin Metze and helmsman Marina Wilke with just a second rowed the Olympic victory before the Soviet eight. For this success she was awarded the Patriotic Order of Merit in silver. At the 1981 World Cup, Marita Sandig was back in the foursome and again received silver behind the Soviet crew.
In 1982 Marita Sandig and Silvia Fröhlich switched to the uncontrolled two and won the title at the World Championships on the Rotsee . After Marita's marriage to the rower Uwe Gasch , Marita Gasch and Silvia Fröhlich were able to defend the title in Duisburg in 1983. In 1984 the two won the GDR championship and the Rotsee regatta, where they also beat the later Olympic champions Rodica Arba and Elena Horvat from Romania. At the 1984 Olympics Gasch and Cheerful were due to the Olympic boycott not participate. In the same year she again received the Patriotic Order of Merit in silver.
