venue
Three stadiums applied for Super Bowl XLVIII:
- MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford - home of the New York Jets / New York Giants
- Raymond James Stadium in Tampa - home of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers
- Sun Life Stadium in Miami Gardens - home of the Miami Dolphins
The selection process took place in 2010. The Sun Life Stadium dropped out of the race in the second selection round. In a direct duel, the MetLife Stadium convinced in the fourth selection round and was selected as the venue for the Super Bowl. Since the average temperature in New Jersey in February is around 0 degrees Celsius and the stadium does not have a roof, criticism quickly arose. The rule to only award the Super Bowl to cities with an average temperature of 10 degrees at the beginning of February or a closed stadium roof was deliberately suspended for the award.
At the kick-off for Super Bowl XLVIII, the temperature on site was 9 degrees Celsius. The coldest Super Bowl in history to date was Super Bowl VI at Tulane Stadium in New Orleans with a temperature of 4 degrees Celsius. Since 1977 ( Super Bowl XII ) all other Super Bowls in New Orleans have been played in closed stadiums. Thus, it was only the second Super Bowl since 1977 that is played in an open stadium outside of California or Florida. The other, Super Bowl XXX , took place in Arizona in 1996 .
The way to the Super Bowl
Denver Broncos
The season of the AFC winner Denver Broncos (balance: 13-3) was characterized by historic offensive performances. They were the first team in NFL history to break the 600 point limit (606), set a new touchdown record (76) and only became the fifth team to score 50 and more points in three games of the season. The MVP elected Broncos quarterback Peyton Manning broke the NFL season records for both touchdowns (55) and space gain (5,477 yards). Manning also threw seven touchdowns at the season opener against the Baltimore Ravens and set an NFL record. Manning's records were made possible. a. due to the statistically best offensive line in the NFL: the men around Pro Bowl guard Louis Vasquez only allowed 20 quarterback sacks during the entire season (NFL-wide 1st place). Supports Manning was also a strong offensive to Pro Bowl - wide receiver Demaryius Thomas (92 Catches, 1,430 yards, 14 touchdowns), two reliable second and third receiver with Wes Welker and Eric Decker and Pro Bowl- tight end Julius Thomas . On the defensive (399 opposing points, 22nd place in the NFL), the Broncos were rather average. In the Special Teams, Broncos Pro Bowl kicker Matt Prater , who u. a. scored a field goal from 64 yards and improved the previous record by one yard. In the AFC play-offs, the San Diego Chargers were defeated 24:17 and then the New England Patriots 26:16. For the Broncos it was the seventh Super Bowl participation, of the previous six finals they had won two ( Super Bowl XXXII and Super Bowl XXXIII ).
Seattle Seahawks
The season success of the NFC winner Seattle Seahawks (balance: 13-3) was made possible by a tough defense, which allowed only 231 points from the opponent in the entire regular season (NFL-wide 1st place). Showpieces were their strong defensive backs around Pro Bowl cornerback Richard Sherman and the two Pro Bowl safeties Kam Chancellor (Strong Safety) and Earl Thomas (Free Safety). The " Legion of Boom " called defensive line forced 28 interceptions (NFL-wide 1st place). But the offense (431 points, NFL-wide 8th place) was above average. Pro Bowl quarterback Russell Wilson scored 26 touchdowns, Pro Bowl running back Marshawn Lynch had 12, and the Seahawks had one of the best offensive line players in the league in Pro Bowl center Max Unger . In the NFC play-offs, the New Orleans Saints were defeated first with 23:15 and then the San Francisco 49ers with 23:17. For the Seahawks it was the second Super Bowl participation, the Super Bowl XL they had lost to the Pittsburgh Steelers .
