Charles R. Thomas (politician, 1861)

Charles Randolph Thomas (born August 21, 1861 in Beaufort , North Carolina , †  March 8, 1931 in Norfolk , Virginia ) was an American politician . Between 1899 and 1911 he represented the state of North Carolina in the US House of Representatives .

Career

Charles Thomas was the son of the same name Charles R. Thomas (1827-1891), who also sat for North Carolina in Congress . The younger Thomas attended the New Bern Academy and then the Emerson Institute in Washington, DC This was followed by studies at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill until 1881 . After studying law and being admitted to the bar in 1882, he began to work in this profession in New Bern . At the same time he embarked on a political career as a member of the Democratic Party .

In 1887, Thomas was a member of the North Carolina House of Representatives . Between 1890 and 1896 he served as the prosecutor in Craven County . From 1893 he was a curator at the University of North Carolina. Thomas became a member of the state executive committee of his party. In the congressional election of 1898 he was elected to the US House of Representatives in Washington in the third constituency of North Carolina, where he succeeded John Edgar Fowler on March 4, 1899 . After five re-elections, he was able to complete six legislative terms in Congress by March 3, 1911. In 1910, he turned down a new candidacy.

After leaving the US House of Representatives, Thomas returned to practice as a lawyer in New Bern. In 1924 he was a delegate to the Democratic National Convention in New York , where John W. Davis was nominated as a presidential candidate. A year later, he moved his residence and law firm to Waynesville . In 1926 he was appointed assistant judge at the Superior Court ; after that he worked again as a lawyer. Charles Thomas died in Norfolk on March 8, 1931 and was buried in Cedar Grove Cemetery in New Bern.
