The Roman Catholic Diocese of Providence ( lat. Dioecesis Providentiensis , English Diocese of Providence ) is in the United States located Roman Catholic diocese , based in Providence , Rhode Iceland .

history

The diocese of Providence was on February 16, 1872 by Pope Pius IX. established from cessions of territory by the dioceses of Boston and Hartford . On March 12, 1904, the Diocese of Providence gave up in the state of Massachusetts parts of its territory (Counties Bristol, Barnstable, Dukes and Nantucket) to establish the Diocese of Fall River .

It has been subordinate to the Archdiocese of Hartford as a suffragan since 1953 ; When it was founded, it was initially under the Archdiocese of New York and in 1875 moved to the new metropolis of Boston.

The diocese of Providence includes the entire state of Rhode Island . It is one of the few bishoprics in the USA whose borders are congruent with those of a state. According to a survey by the Gallup Organization , Rhode Island is the US state with the highest proportion of Catholics.
