International Boxing Hall of Fame
The International Boxing Hall of Fame (IBHOF) is a hall of fame and museum for people connected with boxing . Located in Canastota , New York , it is not far from the Baseball Hall of Fame in Cooperstown and the National Soccer Hall of Fame in Oneonta . It is considered the better known of two international boxing fame (the other is the World Boxing Hall of Fame in Riverside , California ).
The first Boxing Hall of Fame was founded by the American boxing magazine Ring Magazine and was housed in the offices of Madison Square Garden in New York for decades . In 1990, as a result of an initiative by Ed Brophy , who wanted to honor the Canastota boxing world champion Carmen Basilio and his nephew Billy Backus , the new museum in Canastota was inaugurated. In 1997, the multiple award-winning Richard T. Slone was won as an official artist for the International Boxing Hall of Fame, who still holds this position today.
Every year in June there are celebrations lasting several days to honor newly admitted people. Former boxing world champions, personalities from boxing and public life as well as numerous boxing fans take part (the celebrations in 2008 were attended by 20,000 fans.) Boxing athletes can be admitted to the Hall of Fame if they resigned at least five years ago.
As the only German professional boxer, Max Schmeling was accepted into the IBHOF in 1992. In 2010 he was followed by the German boxing promoter Wilfried Sauerland . A year later, the Austro-American boxer Jack Root was accepted. The boxing promoter Aileen Eaton (1909–1987) was elected to the boxing hall of fame in 2002 as the only woman to date . Eaton, known as "The Redhead", was a promoter at the legendary Olympic Auditorium in Los Angeles from 1942 to 1980 .
According to IBHOF founder Ed Brophy in 2008, a new building for a larger gallery museum is to be built over the next five years.
The members of the Boxing Writers Association of America (BWAA for short) and 50 other boxing historians around the world act as the jury to vote for the boxers who are accepted every year .
