.tw is the country code top-level domain (ccTLD) for the Republic of China (Taiwan) . It was introduced on July 31, 1989 and is now technically operated on four servers in Taiwan, the USA and other countries. It is administered by the Taipei University of Technology .

criteria

A .tw domain can be between two and 63 characters long. .Tw domains in Chinese have been possible since mid-2010 . Although this also supports numerous special characters according to the Punycode procedure, these are not available at every registrar - many still only allow alphanumeric characters . The assignment of domains is completely automated and usually takes between one and two days. In addition to the top-level domains, there are also some second-level domains available that are aimed at special target groups , such as .com.tw for companies, .idv.tw forPrivate individuals or .org.tw for non-profit organizations.

With .org.tw it should be noted that, unlike .org, it can only be used by organizations with a formally recognized non-profit status . Interested parties who are not registered as a non-profit organization in Taiwan must prove their non-profit character with documents from their respective home country . In addition, the so-called Domain Name Committee of TWNIC must declare this evidence to be legal. This procedure was last changed in April 2012 with the introduction of the new award criteria.

Problems

Since 2008 there have been reports of fraud in connection with the top-level domain. Chinese domain dealers in particular are intended to aggressively attract customers who are offered overpriced .cn or .com.cn domains that are identical to the .tw or .com.tw address of the person concerned. However, the providers in question often do not even have an accreditation with CNNIC .
