The nominations in the 25 categories were announced on December 14, 2010. Films and television programs that were shown for the first time between January 1 and December 31, 2010 were taken into account. Foreign language films had to have premiered in the country of origin between November 1, 2009 and December 31, 2010.

The most successful film was David Fincher's The Social Network , which turned four of his six nominations into victories. Two awards each went to David O. Russell's boxing drama The Fighter (Best Supporting Actor - Christian Bale and Melissa Leo ) and the comedy The Kids Are All Right (Best Comedy Film, Best Comedy Actress - Annette Bening ). Best drama actors were the American Natalie Portman for Darren Aronofsky's psychological thriller Black Swan , which is set in the New York ballet milieu, and the British Colin Firth for his performance as the stuttering monarch King George VI. in The King's Speech . The historical film led the field of favorites with seven nominations.

The Danish drama In a Better World by Susanne Bier triumphed in the Best Foreign Language Film category . The story of two boys (played by Markus Rygaard and William Jøhnk Nielsen) who are neglected by their parents and make explosives out of revenge is also Denmark's official Oscar candidate in the same category.
