Defending champion in the singles was Nikolai Dawydenko , who was unable to take part in the tournament due to a foot infection. In this year's final Andy Murray prevailed against Novak Đoković in two sets with 6: 2 and 7: 5. This was his third tournament victory in a Masters tournament and eleventh career title. This season it was also his third title after winning the tournaments in Doha and Rotterdam . The brothers Bob and Mike Bryan won the doubles title last year and were eliminated in the semifinals this year. Max Mirny and Andy Ram won the final against Ashley Fisher and Stephen Huss in three sets with 6: 7 4 , 6: 2, [10: 7]. For Mirny it was the fourth title in Miami. He won the tournament in 2003, 2005 and 2006 respectively.
The field of participants in the individual competition consisted of 96 players, that of the doubles competition consisted of 32 pairs. The 32 top seeded players in the singles each received a bye into the second round. The total prize money was $ 3,645,000; total financial liabilities were $ 4,500,000.
The qualification took place from April 23 to 24, 2009. Four qualifying places were played, which entitle them to participate in the main draw of the tournament. There were also two lucky losers.
