Located in the United States , the Archdiocese of Newark ( Latin : Archidioecesis Novarcensis , English : Archdiocese of Newark ) is a diocese of the Roman Catholic Church based in Newark , New Jersey . It includes Essex , Bergen , Hudson, and Union Counties .

history

On July 29, 1853, the newly established Newark Diocese was detached from the Dioceses of New York and Philadelphia . In 1881 and 1937 the dioceses of Trenton and Paterson were established. On December 10, 1937, they were subordinated as suffragan dioceses to the Archdiocese of Newark.

Ecclesiastical province

With the suffragan dioceses Camden , Metuchen , Paterson and Trenton , the archbishopric forms the ecclesiastical province of Newark, whose territory corresponds to that of the state of New Jersey .
