Localization of Saxony in Germany

The transmitter Geyer , the former radio station Geyerscher Wald , near Geyer in the Saxon Erzgebirgskreis is a transmission system for directional radio , mobile radio , digital television ( DVB-T ), analog radio FM and digital radio ( DAB / DAB + ) built from 1972 to 1973 .

There is a 185.5 m high transmission tower as an antenna carrier , which can be seen from great distances and is therefore used by hikers for orientation; the tower is not open to the public. The transmission area does not only extend in Saxony, because it extends far to Thuringia , Bavaria and Bohemia .

Geographical location

The transmitter Geyer is located in the Middle Ore Mountains between the town of Geyer in the east and the core town of Zwönitz in the west. It is located about 300 m southeast of the summit of the highest mountain ( 745.1  m above sea  level ) in the Geyers forest , which corresponds to the highest point of the Geyers area, between the 735 and 740 m contour lines . The Saxon state road  260 (Zwönitzer Straße) runs in the south from Geyer in the direction of Zwönitz to state road 258 past the transmitter. Just south of the spot where the leading to the transmitter forest road branches off from the main road, is next to a 731.8  m high point, a three-layer stone .

History and description

GDR

The transmitter Geyer was built from 1972 to 1973 by the Deutsche Post of the German Democratic Republic (GDR). This operated the system, whose reinforced concrete transmission tower was used to broadcast the programs of the GDR radio and television .

Federal Republic of Germany

With the German reunification , the transmitter became the property of the German radio tower .

From October 2001 to the beginning of April 2003, its transmission tower also served to broadcast the Megaradio program on the 1116 kHz frequency in the medium wave range with a transmission power of 5 kilowatts, with a wire antenna stretched to the ground from the tower.

Analogue television was broadcast until the switch to DVB-T on July 23, 2007 .

Digital radio ( DAB / DAB + ) went into operation on March 25, 2013 .

At a height of 57 meters there are three GSM sector antennas for the D1 network of Telekom Deutschland GmbH .

Digital television (DVB-T2)

On September 26, 2018, the Geyer transmitter switched to the DVB-T2 HD system. The broadcasts are simulcast (Single Frequency Network) using different transmitter locations. The programs of ARD ( MDR -Mux), ZDF and the commercial offer from freenet TV ( encoded in Irdeto ) are distributed in HEVC video coding and in Full HD resolution.

All channels shown in italics are encrypted and can only be received via the DVB-T2 HD platform freenet TV .
