Nasazzi rod
The Nasazzi baton (English Nasazzi's baton ) is an imaginary sports trophy , the wearer of which results from international games of the men's national football teams. Similar to boxing , the rule applies that the reigning Nasazzi baton holder must defend the title in every game and, in the event of a defeat, lose it to the winner of the game. The baton is named after José Nasazzi , the captain of the Uruguayan national team , which won the first World Cup in 1930 .

regulate
- The first title holder is the first winner of a soccer world championship , i.e. Uruguay 1930.
- In the event of a loss in regular time, the baton is passed on to the winner.
- If a title game ends in a draw or if the winner is only found in extra time, on penalties or by tossing a coin, the baton remains with the defending champion.
history
The first winner and namesake of the Nasazzi baton is Uruguay, who won the 1930 World Cup final against Argentina. More than a year later (on September 6, 1931) Uruguay was given the first opportunity to defend this title. In a game for the Copa Río Branco , however, they lost, so that opponent Brazil was the second bearer of the baton. Since Brazil's next international match was still longer in coming than Uruguay's first defense game, the “Seleção” took over the lead in the “Eternal Table” from the “Celeste” during this period. By winning this game again on December 4, 1932 (again against Uruguay), Brazil is also the first team to defend the baton.
In 1934, the Nasazzi staff moved to a European team for the first time when Brazil lost to Spain in the World Cup round of 16 . Since Spain lost to Italy in the quarter-finals, the second FIFA World Cup winner was also a Nasazzi baton. Italy was the first country to defend the baton twice. Subsequently, the staff changed exclusively between European teams for many years. England captured it for the first time in 1934 for almost 5 months. He was lost again due to a defeat against rival Scotland, of all things, who also became a staff carrier for the first time and remained so for more than a year and a half with five defenses. With a total of 6 successful games as a staff carrier, the Scots held a record for several years. And also in the “Eternal Table” they were ahead of their rivals from England. This would only change again more than 50 years later! Wales also captured the Nasazzi staff for the first time and held it for almost a year. It was lost again to England in 1937. As the first team, the "Three Lions" took over the Nasazzi baton a second time. But only the fourth time, 12 years later, they were able to leave Wales behind in the number of total days as bearers of the staff ("Eternal Table"). Wales itself, on the other hand, has been waiting for a new profit for the longest of all 58 staff members since that loss.
At the 1938 World Cup , the baton was not defended because Scotland did not take part. Afterwards u. a. Yugoslavia, Switzerland and Hungary won this title for the first time. The German Reich won it for the first time on April 6, 1941 with a 7-0 against Hungary. In 1943 the Hungarians were successful (now for the third time) with the Nasazzi baton in the 12th game and thus held this record from now on. In 1945, Switzerland became a staff member for the fourth time. This also meant a record. And Sweden also conquered the Nasazzi staff for the first time. In 1947 the Scandinavians were the first team ever to break the magical limit of 1,000 days as carriers of the Nasazzi baton. Also in the same year, after several defenses, they ousted both Hungary, the record holder of successful games (19), and Brazil from 1st place in the "Eternal Table". This particular top spot was taken over by Scotland in 1950 (after having crossed the 1,000-day limit as the second team the year before) - and stayed there for more than 5 years. Shortly before the 1950 World Cup, England took over the Nasazzi baton again, for the fifth time - a record for a long time. With the World Cup defeat against the USA, a team from North and Central America took over the baton for the first time. They passed it on to Chile for the first time in the game afterwards without a successful defense.
With the exception of a brief interruption, the title remained in South America until 1961. Brazil cracked the 1,000-day barrier and Peru, Paraguay and Argentina made the winners list for the first time. Staff bearer Paraguay did not take part in the 1954 World Cup. In 1956, Brazil was awarded the Nasazzi baton for the third time and again took the top spot in the "Eternal Table", which they have not surrendered since then. In 1957 Argentina was the first team to be successful as a bearer of the baton in the 20th game. In 1958, Brazil beat this record. The "Seleção" traveled to the World Cup in Sweden as a Nasazzi staff carrier and defended the title throughout the World Cup. For the third time, the Nasazzi baton holder was also FIFA World Cup winner. Only a year and a half later, with more than 2,000 days as the bearer of the staff, they gave it up again. With a total of 39 successful games, Brazil remained the sole record holder for over 30 years.
In 1960, Uruguay was the fourth nation to break the 1,000-day limit as the holder of the Nasazzi baton. In the following year, they were followed by their big neighbor from the south, Argentina, as the fifth nation in total. Between 1961 and 1966 the staff moved in rapid succession between European, Central American and South American countries. During the 1962 World Cup , Czechoslovakia and Mexico conquered this title for the first time. On March 24, 1963, the Netherlands Antilles won the baton as the smallest country to date. Then Costa Rica, Colombia and Ecuador won the Nasazzi baton for the first time. Before the 1966 World Cup , the Soviet Union took over the baton for the first time and carried it to the semi-finals, where it was won by a national team of divided Germany for the first time after the war. The FRG (West Germany) was the 25th country to hold the Nasazzi staff. The West Germans defended him in the World Cup final, but had to admit defeat in extra time and did not become world champions. For the first time, the defeated World Cup finalist was able to take the baton home with him.
Then the staff changed a few times. For the first time Romania and East Germany became staff carriers. The GDR only won it once at the end of 1967. Due to the very few games at that time, however, she kept the baton for almost a year and a half. In the “Eternal Table”, the GDR remained better placed than the FRG for more than five years. The West Germans recaptured the Nasazzi baton in the last preliminary round game of the 1970 World Cup . On the way to the world championship title, they failed in the semi-finals against Italy, but again only in extra time, so that the baton could also be successfully defended in the game for third place. After the baton had been defended by Brazil for the sixth time (new record) for two years (with a nearly 700-day break) and one year by Italy, during the 1974 World Cup, it first conquered Poland and then West Germany again. He was defended in the World Cup final. Thus, the FRG was now also world champion and Nasazzi staff carrier at the same time. A short time later the West Germans overtook their East German compatriots in the "Eternal Table".
With a few interruptions, the staff remained in Europe until 1992. In 1975, England became the sixth nation to overcome the magical 1,000-day limit as bearer of the staff. In 1976, Czechoslovakia was the first to become a European champion . In 1977 France, Ireland and Bulgaria conquered this title for the first time, followed by the Netherlands in the semi-finals of the 1978 World Cup . They then suffered the same fate as West Germany in 1966: despite defending the Nasazzi staff, the World Cup final was lost in extra time. After that disappointing World Cup in Argentina, it was the most successful time for the FRG as a Nasazzi baton holder: they kept the baton for over 2 years (including during the entire European Championship tournament in 1980 ) and became the seventh nation to break the 1,000-day limit and improved to second place in the "Eternal Table", which Scotland had held for decades. At the 1982 World Cup , Northern Ireland won the baton for the first time for a few days, which France then defended in the semi-finals (which were lost on penalties). In the game for third place, however, he was lost again to Poland. After that, both Portugal and Denmark won him for the first time. The Danes lost it to Hungary, who won it again for the fourth time after an interruption of almost exactly 40 years. Belgium won it for the first time during the European Championship finals in 1984 . There he was taken over by France for the fifth time and defended beyond the European Championship title (for the third time in a row). In 1986 West Germany won the Nasazzi baton for the seventh time (new record!). At the 1986 and 1990 World Championships , Spain was eliminated in the knockout round without having to give up the baton. Sweden won it in 1988, like Hungary a few years earlier, for the fourth time after an almost 40-year hiatus. England's most successful time as a Nasazzi baton carrier was from 1988 to 1990: the baton was retained for one and a half years and initially left Scotland behind in the "Eternal Table" for the first time in over 50 years and then pushed West Germany from second place. In 1992 the "Three Lions" captured the Nasazzi baton for the ninth (record!) And for the time being the last time. As the second nation after Brazil, one overcame the 2,000-day limit as the bearer of the staff. The last successful defense (0-0 against France in the second group game at the European Championships in Sweden ) was the 54th successful game as a baton carrier and was also a new record for a short time. With the subsequent defeat, the baton changed to Sweden, which then lost him to Germany four days later in the semi-finals. For the first time the baton was won as a reunified nation, if only for five days. Because the winner after 90 minutes in the European Championship final in 1992 was sensationally the legendary Denmark team.
At the end of 1992, Brazil equalized the record of successful games set by England a few months earlier as a staff carrier and continued to build it as the sole record holder to this day. The 3,000-day limit was also overcome during this period (and one-off up to the present day). With a few exceptions, the staff remained in South America until 1998. During this time, Bolivia became the 9th country of the South American Football Association for the first time. At the 1994 World Cup , the staff switched several times between teams that were eliminated in the preliminary round. In this way, Switzerland conquered the baton again for a short time after almost 50 years, for the fifth time. Subsequently, first Colombia and a good year later Chile cracked the 1,000-day limit as the eighth and ninth nation as carriers of the Nasazzi baton. At the beginning of 1998 the “Soccer Boys” from the USA followed the example of Switzerland: after a break of almost 50 years, they too won the Nasazzi baton for the second time for a short time. At the 1998 World Cup , the Netherlands only lost the baton in the game for third place. For the first time, Croatia went to a successor state to the collapsed Yugoslavia. In the same year, the "rest of Yugoslavia", consisting only of Serbia and Montenegro, won the baton to pass it on directly to Israel for the first time. After defending it, it was finally passed on to Norway for the first time in early 1999. The Scandinavians immediately defended him 12 times, which is a record for the first win. The Nasazzi staff stayed with the Norwegians for most of the year. In the "Eternal Table" this immediately resulted in 22nd place out of a total of 42 teams!
In the following years until 2006 the staff changed continent again frequently. On June 1, 2001, Australia entered the list of winners for the first time as an oceanic country. On June 3, 2001, the first Asian title holder followed with South Korea. And after the now independent Czech Republic and Iceland as well as Japan won the baton for the first time, from May 2004 to November 2005 three African national teams - Nigeria, Angola and Zimbabwe - held baton for the first time. Zimbabwe became the 50th country to ever win the baton. Previously, the Netherlands became the tenth country to overcome the 1,000-day limit as a Nasazzi staff carrier. The respective staff carriers during the World Championships in 2002 and 2006 were not qualified, so that the title was not up for discussion there. Venezuela, the last country in the South American Football Association, won the Nasazzi baton for the first time in autumn 2006. In November 2006 he returned to Europe. With Georgia, a successor state to the Soviet Union won the baton for the first time. The Georgians then lost it to Scotland, which won the baton again after almost 60 years (and for the fourth time in total). After a few changes, Turkey and Greece were winners of the baton for the first time. Four years later, the Greeks were just as unable to defend their legendary European Championship title of 2004 as they were to even carry the Nasazzi baton into the 2008 tournament. They gave it to Hungary shortly beforehand, which did not take part in the finals, but was the eleventh nation to break the magical 1,000-day limit. From November 2008 the baton was again held by the Netherlands, who also carried it to the 2010 World Cup final (and defended it there despite the subsequent defeat in extra time).
In the last qualifying game for the EM 2012, the Netherlands lost against Sweden and had to take the Nasazzi baton after almost 3 years (1056 days) and 37 games (both is a record) and taking second place in the "Eternal Table" (with a total of now over 2,000 days as a baton bearer) to the previous title holder, who immediately lost it to neighbor Denmark in the next game. In February 2012, the Russian team won the Nasazzi baton for the first time after the collapse of the Soviet Union and then carried it to the European Championship finals in Poland and Ukraine; there she lost him but in the last group game to Greece. After that, no team was able to successfully defend the title, so that Spain not only won the European title in the final, but also the Nasazzi baton. The Spaniards were the twelfth team to overcome the 1,000-day limit as baton carriers and were able to defend the baton for exactly one year before they lost it to Brazil in the final of the Confederations Cup . "Eternal tables" front runner Brazil won the baton for the tenth time and has since held the only record in this regard.
In the period that followed, the staff moved to Asia; At the beginning of the 2014 World Cup in Brazil, the baton was back with Russia, which for the second time in a row started as a baton holder in a major tournament. After two changes in the course of the competition, the Nasazzi staff stayed with Argentina, which was able to defend it against Germany despite the final defeat. The staff stayed in South America until 2016. First Ecuador and later Costa Rica won the Nasazzi baton for the second time after a break of more than 50 years. At the beginning of 2017, the Central American countries Panama and Trinidad & Tobago won this title for the first time. He has been back in Europe since May 2017. Finland won it for the first time as the 58th and so far last country, which was then able to defend it for 9 months.

Since the score after 90 minutes plus stoppage time, but without overtime and penalty shoot-out, is used for the Nasazzi baton, there is no guarantee for the Nasazzi baton (unlike the UFWC, see immediately) that it will be combined with the FIFA World Cup comes as soon as the incumbent Nasazzi baton holder reaches the knockout phase of a FIFA World Cup.
Nasazzi staff and unofficial soccer world championship
A comparable fictitious competition as unofficial football World Cup (Engl. Unofficial Football World Championships , UFWC) tracked. The two ratings differ in the starting point and the rating of games that were decided after the end of regular time, for example in extra time or penalty shoot-outs.
Both titles were worn by the same team several times, but not permanently combined because of the different modes. Most recently, from August 21, 2002 to July 11, 2010 both titles were held together. Due to the defeat of the double title holder Netherlands in the extension of the World Cup final against Spain, the titles separated again, as Spain became UFWC and FIFA world champions, but the Nasazzi staff remained with the Netherlands.
On July 9, 2014, the two titles were combined again in the World Cup semi-finals for the first time since 2010. Nasazzi baton carrier Argentina defeated the unofficial soccer world champion Netherlands on penalties and thus combined both titles. In the final, Germany became the official and unofficial world champion, but because it was still 0-0 after regular time, Argentina kept the Nasazzi baton.
List of associations and separations:
- Association on November 14, 1934: UFWC champions England beats Nasazzi baton bearers Italy ( Battle of Highbury ).
- Separation on July 30, 1966: England wins against West Germany in the extension of the World Cup final , the Nasazzi staff remains with West Germany.
- 2nd unification on July 7, 1974: UFWC champions Netherlands is defeated by Nasazzi-Stab -träger BRD in the World Cup final .
- Separation on June 25, 1978: Argentina wins against the Netherlands in the extension of the World Cup final , the Nasazzi staff remains with the Netherlands.
- Barely missed unification in 1982: At the World Cup, the Nasazzi baton is defended by France against West Germany in the semi-finals , the UFWC is transferred from Poland to Italy. In the game for third place , Poland wins the Nasazzi baton in return
- 3rd union on June 2, 1984: Nasazzi baton carrier Yugoslavia wins against UFWC champions Portugal.
- Separation on June 22, 1986: Belgium wins against Spain in the extension of the World Cup quarter-finals , the Nasazzi staff remains with Spain.
- 4th Union on July 4th 1993: UFWC champions Argentina defeated Nasazzi baton Mexico in the Copa America final .
- Separation on July 23, 1995: Uruguay wins the Copa America final against Brazil on penalties, the Nasazzi staff remains with Brazil.
- 5. Unification on July 4th and immediate separation on July 7th, 1998: Nasazzi baton carrier Netherlands wins against UFWC champions Argentina in the World Cup quarter-finals . In the extension of the semi-finals , the UFWC title is lost again to Brazil.
- Unification attempt on June 29, 2000: UFWC champions Italy decide the EM semifinals against Nasazzi baton carrier Netherlands only on penalties. The UFWC title is thus defended, but the Nasazzi baton has not been won.
- 6. Association on August 21, 2002: UFWC champions Netherlands defeated Nasazzi baton holder Norway.
- Separation on July 11, 2010: Spain wins against the Netherlands in the extension of the World Cup final , the Nasazzi staff remains with the Netherlands.
- 7th unification on July 9th and immediate renewed separation on July 13th, 2014: Nasazzi baton carrier Argentina beats UFWC champions Netherlands in the semi-finals of the World Cup . In the final , Argentina is only defeated by Germany after extra time and can keep the Nasazzi baton, while the UFWC title goes to Germany.
- 8. Unification on September 3, 2014: Less than two months later, Germany and Argentina meet again in a friendly. Argentina wins the game 4-2 and can thus both defend the Nasazzi staff and regain the UFWC title.
- Separation on June 26th, 2015: At the Copa América 2015 , Colombia is subject to the quarter-finals of Argentina on penalties. Argentina wins the UFWC title, the Nasazzi staff remains with the Colombians.
Records
- As far as the total time is concerned, Brazil is the “record holder of the Nasazzi staff” with a total of 3885 days ahead of the Netherlands, England and West Germany.
- Likewise, Brazil holds the records for winning (11 ×) and defending (86 ×) the Nasazzi staff. This results in a total of 97 successful games as a Nasazzi staff member.
- The Netherlands held the baton for 37 games, which was a new record. Curiously, the Swedes are both involved in the staff gain (November 19, 2008) and loss (October 11, 2011). The longest defenses of the title until then had reached Brazil with Pelé and 21 games in 1958 and the Federal Republic of Germany with 21 games in 1979/80.
- The minimum record goes to the Soviet Union (at the four-country tournament in 1988 ) and Australia. The Nasazzi baton stayed with them with the shortest duration of just 2 days between March 31 and April 2, 1988 and June 1 and 3, 2001, respectively.
- In 1958 and 2010, the Nasazzi baton holder, who was in office before the World Cup, also reached the World Cup finals. In 1958 he was also world champion.
- In 1938, 1954, 2002, 2006 and 2018 the Nasazzi staff did not take part in the FIFA World Cup.
- In 2006 even the last four Nasazzi baton holders were unable to qualify for the official competition before the start of the FIFA World Cup (Zimbabwe, Nigeria, Romania, Uruguay). Since the then "title holder" Hungary had not qualified for the European Championship in 2008 , Nasazzi staff and the unofficial soccer world championship were not up for grabs there either.
Bar bearer 1,000 days and more
From 1931 to 1934, Brazil was the second carrier in the possession of the Nasazzi staff for a total of 994 days. The "sound barrier" of 1,000 days was the first to break through the Swedish national team. In the 4-1 victorious friendly game against Denmark on June 15, 1947 (the 14th game as a baton carrier), the Swedes wore the Nasazzi baton for a total of 1,148 days. (The imaginary limit of exactly 1,000 days was exceeded on January 18, 1947.) Since then, the following twelve nations have carried the Nasazzi baton for more than 1,000 days, three of them ( highlighted in bold ) for more than 2,000 days.
- June 15, 1947: Sweden, 1,148 tons (1,000 on January 18, 1947)
- October 1st, 1949: Scotland, 1,152 tons (1,000 on May 2nd, 1949)
- March 01, 1953: Brazil, 1,309 tons (1,000 on April 26, 1952)
- March 10, 1959: Brazil, 2,012 tons (2,000 on February 26, 1959)
- August 17, 1960: Uruguay, 1,030 tons (1,000 on July 18, 1960)
- June 4th, 1961: Argentina, 1.009 tons (1,000 on May 26th, 1961)
- September 03, 1975: England, 1,076 tons (1,000 on June 19, 1975)
- September 12, 1979: West Germany, 1,105 tons (1,000 on May 30, 1979)
- April 29, 1992: England, 2,021 tons (2,000 on April 8, 1992)
- February 18, 1993: Brazil, 3,049 tons (3,000 on December 31, 1992)
- February 8, 1995: Colombia, 1,147 tons (1,000 on September 14, 1994)
- May 26, 1996: Chile, 1,007 tons (1,000 on May 19, 1996)
- April 30, 2003: Netherlands, 1,019 tons (1,000 on April 11, 2003)
- September 10, 2008: Hungary, 1,001 tons (1,000 on 09.09.2008)
- March 25, 2011: Netherlands, 2,008 tons (2,000 on March 17 , 2011 )
- August 15, 2012: Spain, 1,014 tons (1,000 on August 1 , 2012 )

Eternal table
For all its appeal, the “Eternal Table” remains a distorted representation. In earlier decades, international football matches did not take place as regularly and frequently as they do today. For a variety of reasons, it could happen that a national team that won the Nasazzi baton did not have to defend it for a very long time. In relation to the duration as the owner of the staff, this is of course beneficial and is reflected accordingly in the perpetual table. The following national teams had (sometimes more than once) international game-free times of at least 150 days (and sometimes considerably more): Uruguay, Brazil, Italy, Scotland, Wales, Switzerland, Hungary, Sweden, Chile, Paraguay, Argentina, Spain, Mexico, Colombia, GDR.
Furthermore, distortions arise from serious political changes. This has a particular effect on German national teams ("Germany" vs. "BRD" and "GDR" or "Dt. Reich"). But also "Czech Republic" vs. "Czechoslovakia" is also affected, as are "Georgia" and "Russia" vs. "Soviet Union", "Croatia" and "Serbia-Montenegro" vs. "Yugoslavia". Strictly speaking, the past of Istria should also be mentioned in this context ("Yugoslavia" vs. "Italy"). Yes, and even the listing of the legendary national team of the "Netherlands Antilles" is affected by political changes.
