The Primeira Liga do Brasil 2016 is the first time this competition has been held in Brazil. This is among a total of 12 clubs from Minas Gerais , Santa Catarina , Rio de Janeiro , Parana and Rio Grande do Sul . The competition is therefore unofficially called Sul-Minas-Rio . The games began on January 27 and ended on March 31, 2016.

As part of the corruption scandal in FIFA , the president of the Brazilian Football Association Marco Polo Del Nero came into the spotlight. One day before the election of the new FIFA Presidium, he left Zurich spontaneously and resigned as a member of the FIFA Executive Committee on November 26th . On December 3, 2015, he resigned as CBF President for 180 days after the FIFA Ethics Committee opened proceedings against him. This resulted in considerable unrest in the association.

In November 2015 , 15 clubs from Minas Gerais , Paraná , Rio de Janeiro , Rio Grande do Sul and Santa Catarina founded the Primeira Liga do Brasil due to dissatisfaction with how the scandal was dealt with and fears about the 2016 championship season . The latter had disputes with the CBF, which initially recognized the competition, withdrew it and finally confirmed it.

First had made Rio de Janeiro the CR Flamengo and Fluminense wish to participate in the competition. But after it appeared that they could settle their disputes with the national association of the state of Rio de Janeiro, the Federação de Futebol do Estado do Rio de Janeiro (FERJ), they withdrew their reports. The remaining clubs wanted to see the event as a link to the Copa Sul-Minas from 2000. In the end, the clubs from Rio agreed to participate. Of the 15 members, only 12 took part in the tournament.

The game is played in three groups of four teams each. The clubs only meet once. The first in the group will go straight to the semi-finals. The semi-finals are complemented by the best runners-up in the group.
