Inter Milan progressed quite easily against AEK Athens, after a 3-1 home win a 2-2 away was enough for them. It was just as easy for Valencia CF, who threw Hertha defeated Servette Geneva 3-0 and 2-2 out of the competition. The first big surprise was the elimination of the top French club Olympique Lyon, who only beat Czech club Slovan Liberec 1: 1 at home and lost 4 1: 4 away. Dortmund went on happy and lackluster against the stronger Lille without winning, just because of the away goals rule. PSV Eindhoven threw out another favorite, Leeds United were beaten 1-0 at home and they could play 0-0 away. Feyenoord Rotterdam scored the important away goal at Glasgow Rangers and played 1-1, but at home they got the upper hand in an exciting game 3-2. The next big sensation was achieved by the Israeli team Hapoel Tel Aviv, which knocked the big favorites AC Parma, with stars like Hakan Şükür and Fabio Cannavaro , 2-1 and 0-0 out of the tournament. AC Milan with its star team already looked like the sure winner after the 1-0 away against Roda Kerkrade, but at home they lost 0-1 and since extra time went goalless, there was a penalty shoot-out. Here, however, the Italians retained the upper hand with 3-2.

Tel Aviv could not continue its series of surprises. With the 1-0 they had created a good result at home, but in the second leg they had to admit defeat with 0-2 and were eliminated.
In the purely Dutch duel between PSV Eindhoven and Feyenoord Rotterdam it became the expected close affair. PSV could only play 1-1 at home, but Feyenoord didn't make it better in the second leg and also played 1-1 at home. Since extra time went goalless, there was a penalty shoot-out; here Feyenoord was able to prevail in front of the home crowd with 5: 4.
Slovan Liberec was the surprise team alongside Hapoel Tel Aviv. The 0-0 win was still a rather mediocre starting position for the second leg, which Dortmund won 4-0.
Valencia CF had created a very good starting position for the second leg in their home town Mestalla with the 1-1 draw at favorites Inter Milan, but Inter played very cleverly away and were technically far superior to their opponents, so they celebrate a 1-0 victory could.
4 The first leg was played at the GSP Stadium in Nicosia , Cyprus because UEFA bannedinternational football matches in Israel .
