Edinson Roberto Cavani Gómez (born February 14, 1987 in Salto ) is a Uruguayan football player who also has Italian nationality. He was last under contract with Paris Saint-Germain in the French Ligue 1 .
family
Cavani's grandparents, or at least the grandfather on his father's side, was (s) Italian and once emigrated from Maranello to Uruguay. His father Luis (El Gringo) Cavani also played football in the Uruguayan premier league and later became a coach.
Career
societies
Danubio FC
Edinson Cavani started his career in the youth team of Danubio FC . In the Clausura 2006 and thus in the 2005/06 season he was first used for the A-team Danubios in the Primera División , thanks to his achievements he was able to earn a place in the regular formation. With the Montevideans, who also won the Uruguayan championship at the end of the 2006/07 season, he won the Torneo Apertura in 2006. In total, he played 25 games for Danubio, in which he hit the opposing goal nine times.
US Palermo
During the European winter break, Cavani moved to the Italian first division club US Palermo . Here he scored a goal to make it 1-1 in his first appearance in the game against Fiorentina . After the departure of Amauri to Juventus Turin for the 2008/09 season , Cavani rose to become a regular at Palermo and was one of the top scorers of his team.
SSC Naples
For the 2010/11 season Cavani moved on loan to SSC Napoli . However, the Napoli SSC signed Cavani after a year for a transfer fee of 16 million euros. He finished the 2010/11 season on the list of goalscorers in Italy with 26 goals in second place behind Antonio Di Natale (28 goals). Across all competitions, Cavani scored 33 competitive goals for Naples this season.
He scored the same number of goals in the 2011/12 season : He finished the league with 23 goals in third place on the list of top scorer in Serie A. He scored five more goals (including a brace against Manchester City ) in the Champions League , in who only eliminated his team in the last sixteen against the eventual winner Chelsea FC . Cavani also scored five goals in the Italian Cup . The latter was also won by Naples, with Cavani scoring the 1-0 penalty in the 2-0 final victory over Juventus Turin .
He completed 104 league games for SSC Napoli, in which he scored 78 goals.
Paris Saint-Germain
On July 16, 2013, Paris Saint-Germain signed Cavani for 64 million euros. He signed a five-year contract until June 30, 2018. With the French, he made his Ligue 1 debut on August 9, 2013, when he came on as a substitute for Lavezzi in the 72nd minute of the game against Montpellier. On the 2nd matchday he was in the starting lineup for the first time in Ligue 1 and scored the goal to make it 1-1. In his first season with the French, he made 30 league games for the Parisians and scored 16 goals. At the end of the season he won the national championship with the team. The team also won the Coupe de la Ligue of 2014. In the 2014/15 season , he was used 35 times in Ligue 1 and scored 18 goals. Cavani celebrated a converted penalty in the 3: 1 against RC Lens on October 17, 2014 with the so-called pistolero jubilation, in which the player imitates a gunshot with his arms. For this gesture, the match's referee, Nicolas Rainville , showed him the yellow card for unsportsmanlike conduct. When Cavani protested and took the referee by the arm, the referee sent him off the field with a yellow-red card. Cavani's second season with the French capital city club also ended with winning the national championship. They also won the league cup . In the final of the Coupe de France 2014/15 Cavani secured his club the third title win of the season with the 1-0 winning goal. In the 2015/16 season he played 32 league games and scored 19 goals. Again he won the triple of championship, Coupe de France and League Cup with the team . During the 2016/17 season , he appeared in the league 36 times and scored 35 goals. In addition, he has made eight appearances (eight goals) in the Champions League . On June 13, 2020, the sports director of PSG announced in the French daily Journal du Dimanche that Cavani would leave the club in the summer after a total of 200 goals in 301 games.
National team
Juniors
In January 2007 Cavani was appointed for the U-20 South American Championship in the Uruguayan U-20 national team. There he made his debut under coach Gustavo Ferrín on January 8, 2007 in the game against Venezuela in the U-20. In this tournament, he scored seven goals in nine games, becoming the top scorer and was instrumental in ensuring that Uruguay finished third and qualified for the 2007 Junior World Cup in Canada. At the World Cup finals, he scored two goals in the preliminary round, but failed with his team in the second round at the USA. Overall, Cavani ran 14 times for the national team in this age group and scored eleven goals.
Olympic team
Cavani was also named as one of three senior players in the Uruguayan squad for the 2012 Olympic football tournament. In this national team he made his debut on July 11, 2012 in the game against Chile, played a total of five international matches and scored three times.
A national team
Since his debut on February 6, 2008, he has completed over 100 international matches for the Uruguayan national soccer team . He played his 100th international match on March 26, 2018 in the final of the China Cup against Wales , in which he scored the winning goal for a 1-0 victory.
Cavani was appointed to the squad for the 2010 World Cup by national coach Óscar Tabárez . In this tournament he reached the semi-finals with his team and played all games except the first group game. In the game for third place , which was lost 3-2 to Germany , Cavani scored the goal to equalize 1-1. At the 2011 Copa America in Argentina, he won the title with Uruguay. He also finished fourth in the 2013 FIFA Confederations Cup with the Uruguayan senior team . In the game for third place against Italy , they lost on penalties. Edinson Cavani scored three goals during the tournament, two of them against Italy. At the 2014 World Cup in Brazil , he was again part of the Uruguayan squad. He reached the round of 16 with Uruguay, where they were eliminated 2-0 by Colombia. He was also part of the Uruguayan team at the 2015 Copa América . There he was eliminated with the Celeste in the quarter-finals against Chile. In this game he was sent off with a yellow-red card after lightly touching his opponent Gonzalo Jara . Cavani's body reaction was the result of a gross unsportsmanlike behavior by Jara, who had immediately previously pressed his right middle finger into Cavani's buttocks and whispered a few words in his ear relating to the previous day's arrest of Cavani's father as a result of causing a fatal traffic accident. This unsportsmanlike incident subsequently attracted considerable media attention, especially in Uruguay but also internationally.
In qualifying for the 2018 World Cup , he was the best South American goalscorer with ten goals and contributed to Uruguay qualifying as the second best South American team for the World Cup. In the tournament , he first met in the third group game to 3-0 against hosts Russia . In the round of 16 he scored both goals for his team in a 2-1 win against Portugal . He was also elected player of the game, but had to be replaced due to an injury. In the quarter-finals, which lost 2-0 to eventual world champions France , he could not be used due to the injury.
On November 18, 2019, he scored his 50th international goal in a 2-2 draw against Argentina .
