List of initial stamp issues
The list of the first stamp issues gives an overview of the first official stamps of a postal area. Postal areas are usually congruent with states or dependent areas with their own postal service, but in individual cases postage stamps are also issued by international organizations (e.g. UNO ) or private postal services on behalf of the state (e.g. Thurn and Taxis ). Special postage stamp issues for occupied territories of another state, expenses for post offices abroad and emergency or local issues due to a lack of stamps, which are often listed in catalogs as collecting areas with their own numbering in the appendix to the regular issues of a country, are not taken into account.
For the names of the postal areas, the name customary in philatelic literature is used, which in some cases deviates from the official German spelling. The division into postal areas is based on the stamp catalogs widely used in Germany, especially the Michel catalog . This also includes issues from states as postal territory that have no state continuity and where the current state does not see itself as the successor state to the former state, for example the Slovak state and Slovakia .
