action

prehistory

After Zemo's family was killed in the Battle of Sokovia , for which he blamed the Avengers and therefore developed the treacherous plan to pit Tony Stark and Steve Rogers against each other, there are now several superhero teams on earth. The two rival parties are eroded by moral conflict. The official Avengers, led by Stark, are now working for the United Nations under the Sokovia Accord , and Rogers is also leading a team of superheroes from underground. But the next common threat has announced itself in the mid-credit scene of Avengers: Age of Ultron : About 2 years after the Avengers split up, they have to take on the titan Thanos, who was responsible for the attack in New York years earlier and who wants to control the entire universe with the help of the infinity stones.

Star-Lord, Rocket, Gamora and others of the Guardians of the Galaxy have already been pursued by Thanos and his supporters or see him as an enemy. In addition, Gamora is Thanos' foster daughter, but she detests him and tried to thwart his plans.

Thor, Bruce Banner alias Hulk, Loki, Heimdall and other Aesir find themselves in a spaceship on their way to Earth after the destruction of Asgard , their home planet, to find a place to stay. On the way they are stopped by the Sanctuary II , Thanos' huge spaceship.

Thanos possesses a powerful (infinity) glove which, in conjunction with the six infinity stones, has unimaginable power. The infinity stones are the "tesseract" (space, blue) from Captain America: The First Avenger , the "ether" (reality, red) from Thor - The Dark Kingdom , the "thought stone" (yellow) from Avengers: Age of Ultron , the “Orb” (power, purple) from Guardians of the Galaxy , the “Eye of Agamotto” (time, green) from Doctor Strange and the still undiscovered “ Soul Stone ” (orange).

content

The Aesir spaceship, in which Thor, his brother Loki, Bruce Banner and Heimdall are, has been attacked. The Titan Thanos killed half of the sir and let the other half flee. He now tortures Thor and threatens to kill him if Loki does not hand him the space stone. Loki bends over and gives him the tesseract in which the stone is located. Thor and Hulk fail to stop Thanos from escaping with the stone. Thanos then kills both Heimdall, who can teleport Hulk to earth with the Bifröst, and Loki, who previously tried in vain to outsmart him. The space stone is the second infinity stone that the titan can bring into his possession. He has already stolen the first, the Power Stone, from the Xandarian Nova Corps, killing half of the Xandarians. He sends his four foster children Cull Obsidian, Ebony Maw, Corvus Glaive and Proxima Midnight to two more stones that are on earth. He then destroys the spaceship on which Thor is still trapped.

On earth, the Hulk or Bruce Banner crashes through the ceiling of the New York Temple of the magician Dr. Strange and Wong. Strange goes to Tony Stark and asks for help. The three tell Stark about the six Infinity Stones: elementary pieces of crystal that were created after the Big Bang and together represent an invincible force that Thanos wants to get into his possession at all costs. The stones were hurled into different corners of the universe; the space and power stone that Thanos already has, but also the thought stone, which is in Vision's forehead, the reality stone, the time stone owned by Strange and the soul stone. To track down Vision, Stark needs the help of Steve Rogers, even if the Avengers had previously fallen out. Strange protects the time stone.

Then a spaceship from Thanos' fleet with Ebony Maw and Cull Obsidian on board penetrates the earth's atmosphere. Maw, who has telekinetic skills, tries to take the stone from Strange. However, since he does not succeed in this, he kidnaps him and the stone to his spaceship. Meanwhile, Stark and Peter Parker are fighting obsidian. Eventually Wong can teleport him up a mountain. Stark and Parker then manage to smuggle themselves onto the spaceship. Meanwhile, Maw begins to torture Strange so that he can remove the protective spell around the time stone. Peter, who is now wearing his new suit, works out a plan with Stark: After Stark has blasted a hole in the side of the ship and has thus carried Maw into space with the negative pressure, where he dies, they can free Strange. Meanwhile, Wong retreats to the temple to protect it, and Banner contacts Rogers.

The Guardians of the Galaxy are on their way with their spaceship when they receive the Aesir distress signal. Following this they come across the rubble field of the Asen ship destroyed by Thanos. The only survivor among the rubble they can bring on board is Thor. Thanos' foster daughter Gamora tells him about her father's plans: He tries to wipe out half the population of the universe with the help of the six stones in order to bring the universe into balance and protect it from overpopulation . If he could put all six stones in his glove, Thanos would only have to snap his fingers and his plan would become a reality.

Since the reality stone is at the Collector on the planet Knowhere and Thor wants to get a new weapon in the fight against Thanos, they split up. Thor travels with Rocket, from whom he gets a new eye, and Groot to Nidavellir , the rest of the Guardians to Knowhere. There they watch how Thanos tortures the collector, whereupon Drax and Gamora attack Thanos for personal reasons. Thanos is mortally wounded by Gamora, which is only an illusion created by Thanos' using the Reality Stone, just like the Collector, and served as a trap to kidnap Gamora. When she tries to explain the madness of his plan to Thanos' ship, the Sanctuary II , Thanos is only interested in getting possession of the next stone. He knows from Gamora's sister Nebula, whom he is keeping prisoner on his ship, that she knows the place where the soul stone is. When Thanos begins to torture Nebula, Gamora reveals that Nebula is on Vormir. Once there, Thanos learns from Red Skull, the guardian of the stone, that he has to sacrifice someone he genuinely loves in order to get the soul stone. Gamora believes that this will ruin his plans, since he genuinely loves nothing or anyone. However, when she realizes that she is that person, she tries to kill herself, which Thanos prevents. With tears in his eyes he pushes Gamora down a cliff and receives the stone.

Vision has meanwhile withdrawn to Scotland with his secret love, Wanda Maximoff. When Glaive and Midnight unexpectedly appear there and try to remove the thought stone from his head, they get help from Steve Rogers, Sam Wilson and Natasha Romanoff. Together they manage to repel the attackers, seriously injuring Glaive. Vision wants his stone to be destroyed even if that meant his death. After picking up Rhodes and Banner from the Avengers headquarters on a stopover, the latter wants to try to remove the stone from Vision's forehead in such a way that it survives itself. So they decide to seek help from the technologically advanced Wakanda. There they also meet the healed Bucky Barnes, who has received a new arm prosthesis from T'Challa . King T'Challa's sister Shuri begins by separating the stone from Vision's neurons without damaging it. When Obsidian, Midnight, and Glaive arrive in Wakanda and attempt to break through the protective dome that surrounds Wakanda, Wakanda's warriors and the Avengers battle the Titan's children and the hundreds of unintelligent creatures they bring with them, the Outriders.

Thor has meanwhile reached Nidavellir, but the neutron star used to make a weapon has gone out and its rings have come to a standstill. The dwarf Eitri reveals to the three that it was he who once made the glove for Thanos in order to save the other dwarfs living there, who were killed by Thanos a little later. To make up for his mistake, however, he needs the energy of the star to heat up the furnace and thus cast the ultimate weapon, Stormbreaker . Thor can get the rings moving again with the help of Rocket, and Eitri pours the metal into the mold. Because there is no handle for Thor's new ax, Groot sacrifices an arm, but it immediately grows back.

Stark, Parker and Strange have meanwhile decided to let the autopilot of Maw's spaceship take you to Titan to fight Thanos there. But first they meet the other Guardians Peter Quill, Drax and Mantis, who have appeared there on the instructions of Nebula, who was able to free herself and who arrives a little later. Since both groups assume that the other is working for Thanos, they fight each other at first, but quickly realize that they are on the same side. Using the time stone, Strange looks into over 14 million possible futures of her fight against Thanos, only one of which ends victorious. When Thanos appears, they manage to arrest him. Together they try to take the glove off him. But when Quill learns from him that Gamora is dead, he attacks him single-handedly out of anger, whereupon Thanos can free himself again and defeat the Avengers. When Thanos threatens to kill Stark, Strange trades the time stone for Stark's life. When Stark asked Strange why he did that, Strange replied that they were now in the final.

In Wakanda, meanwhile, there is a great battle between the Avengers with their allies and the supporters of Thanos. Thor, Rocket and Groot have also arrived. With combined forces they manage to kill the Black Order and most of the Outriders. However, when Thanos himself arrives in Wakanda and is able to overcome the Avengers who stand in his way, Vision reminds Wanda of her promise to use her strength to destroy the stone in his head so that it does not fall into Thanos' hands. She already believes that she has done her work, but Thanos uses his newly acquired power by turning back time, putting the thought stone back together and then tearing it out of Vision's head, which it does not survive. Shortly after Thanos has inserted the last Infinity Stone into his glove, Thor falls down on him with his new ax, the blow penetrates deep into his chest.

The Titan is still conscious and, as announced by Gamora, wipes out half of all living things in the entire universe with a single snap of the finger. Affected organisms dissolve and break down to dust. Among the victims are Drax, Mantis, Groot and Quill, as well as T'Challa, Bucky, Wanda, Sam, Strange and Peter Parker, all of whom vanish into dust in front of their friends. While the remaining Avengers mourn their missing friends together with Rocket and Okoye, Stark is stuck with Nebula on Titan. Thanos disappears through a portal and rests on the porch of his house in a secluded spot.

In the post-credit scene , Nick Fury and Maria Hill can be seen noticing that more and more people are falling to dust around them, which causes great chaos. After Hill is also affected, Fury can still activate a transmitter before he also dissolves. The icon of Captain Marvel can be seen on the screen of the fallen transmitter .

production

Production history

After the film The First Avenger: Civil War had proven to be useful from a dramaturgical point of view and served the directors to bring together the many narrative arcs and hero characters in order to prepare the third phase of the Marvel Cinematic Universe with a staff-rich terrain, Avengers: Infinity War and its planned sequel after a preliminary reconciliation of the Avengers will be the culmination of everything that has happened so far in the Marvel Universe. In May 2016, it was announced that the originally announced title of the film, Avengers: Infinity War - Part I , and the title of the sequel are still to be revised. At the same time, the Russo brothers announced that in the film, the conflicts between the Avengers would not be completely resolved, nor would the hostilities between them end. In the film, the characters, who are at the height of dysfunction and hostility among each other, are to be packed into a story in which they will face the greatest danger they have ever encountered. The avengers in the film are said to have to take on the titan Thanos who wants to subjugate the entire galaxy with the help of the infinity stones.

At the end of May 2016, the Russo brothers and screenwriters Christopher Markus and Stephen McFeely announced that the characters Star-Lord and Rocket Raccoon would be involved. Shortly afterwards it was announced that Gamora, Drax and Groot - and thus almost all characters from Guardians of the Galaxy - might also have an appearance in the film. A crossover could connect the cosmic elements of the Marvel Cinematic Universe with the more grounded parts of the movie universe. Actor Josh Brolin announced in an interview in March 2018 that the youth of villain Thanos will play a role in the film.

In April 2017 said Kevin Feige , head of Marvel Studios, said in an interview that for Star-Lord, Gamora, Groot, Drax and Rocket between the events of Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 and Avengers: Infinity War considerable to Time jump will come, because the second part takes place only one year after the events from the first part from 2014, between Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 and Avengers: Infinity War, however, about four years pass and the time calculation in Guardians of the Galaxy slightly different.

Rod

In May 2015, Marvel officially announced that Christopher Markus and Stephen McFeely would write the upcoming Avengers two-parter. Kevin Feige said : "Chris and Steve have been an integral part of the Marvel family since the first days of Phase One, and their work speaks for itself."

As in the previous film The First Avenger: Civil War , the directors are the brothers Anthony and Joe Russo . Regarding the basic structure of the film, Anthony Russo said in April 2016 that they are planning a multi-perspective approach in which they gradually introduce the stories of the individual characters and only bring them together later in the narrative. At the same time it was announced that the characters Star-Lord and Thor will be used in the film.

occupation

Since a number of other Marvel films were to be made before filming was completed, Anthony Russo was unable to give precise details about the actors before they started, but said that it would be a big story with a lot of characters. After the role of Spider-Man not only in the movie The First Avenger: Civil War directed by the Russo brothers, but also in Spider-Man: Homecoming , the first movie with Spider-Man as the main character in the new edition When Holland had been occupied, Anthony Russo commented on the appearance of this character: Spider-Man was always a big favorite for me and my brother when we were growing up. A particular pleasure with Marvel films is that different directors can explore different character traits of the characters.

The cast of Thanos with actor Josh Brolin became known early on . The cast of other roles later became known after some rumors about them emerged. Robert Downey Jr. , who is said to have been paid over $ 75 million for the film, and Chris Evans can again be seen in their roles as Tony Stark and Steve Rogers . Also, Chris Hemsworth and Mark Ruffalo return as Thor and Banner Bruce back. With an official casting call in December 2016, Scarlett Johansson as Natasha Romanoff and Chadwick Boseman as T'Challa were confirmed. The role of Wanda Maximoff aka Scarlet Witch was cast with Elizabeth Olsen . Paul Bettany will play the android Vision . Sebastian Stan is set to take on the role of Bucky Barnes . During San Diego Comic-Con 2017 , it was officially confirmed that Don Cheadle will return as James Rhodes . Also, Tom Holland and Anthony Mackie are as Spider-Man and Falcon to be seen. Benedict Cumberbatch takes on the role of Dr. Stephen Strange , and actor Benedict Wong , who starred in the film Doctor Strange in the role of the librarian Wong , is said to star in the role of his loyal sidekick .

There will also be a crossover with the Guardians . As in Guardians of the Galaxy and its sequel , Chris Pratt will take on the role of Peter Quill alias Star-Lord , Zoe Saldana as Gamora and Dave Bautista as Drax . In January 2017, it was announced that Karen Gillan will be playing Nebula and Sean Gunn will be performing the motion capture for Rocket . In addition, Pom Klementieff will have an appearance as Mantis. The speaking roles of Rocket and Groot were taken over by Bradley Cooper and Vin Diesel , as in the film Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 .

In addition, several supporting actors were confirmed. The appearances of Tom Hiddleston as Loki , Letitia Wright as Shuri and Kerry Condon as FRIDAY became known through IMDb . Photos from Edinburgh , a location for the film, suggested that Tessa Thompson was involved as the Valkyrie. In interviews, Gwyneth Paltrow and Jon Favreau also announced that both would also be part of the film. Jacob Batalon also announced his appearance in an interview . Some characters from Black Panther also reappear, for example Danai Gurira as Okoye, Winston Duke as M'Baku and the German actress Florence Kasumba as Ayo. The motion capture recordings of the "Black Order" were shot with actor and movement choreographer Terry Notary as Cull Obsidian, Tom Vaughan-Lawlor as Ebony Maw and Michael James Shaw as Corvus Glaive. Notary also took over the motion capture recordings from Groot. In mid-April 2018, the Russo brothers announced in an interview with the Radio Times that Carrie Coon was playing Proxima Midnight. She later confirmed via Twitter that she was taking over both the motion capture recordings and the voice. Other cast members include Cobie Smulders as Maria Hill and Benicio del Toro as the Collector . With the publication of an official film poster in mid-March 2018, the participation of Idris Elba as Heimdall and Peter Dinklage as Eitri was confirmed. As in all previous MCU films and many other Marvel comic adaptations, Stan Lee has another cameo , this time as a bus driver.

With the release of the film, the return of William Hurt as Thaddeus Ross and Ross Marquand as Red Skull became known. The latter was portrayed by Hugo Weaving in Captain America: The First Avenger . Even Samuel L. Jackson emerged a renewed time as Nick Fury on, but only in the post-credits scene.

In the finished film, contrary to expectations, some actually confirmed characters do not appear. Jeremy Renner as Hawkeye, Paul Rudd as Ant-Man and Jon Favreau as Happy Hogan are missing. However, Favreau can be seen in the deleted scenes from the home theater release, along with Joe Russo, who plays a paparazzo named Bert.

Filming

It was planned to film the film at the same time, back-to-back , with that of Avengers: Endgame . The actors should move back and forth between shooting one and the other film. Because the cast is large, the shooting schedule was organized around the availability of the actors. However, it was later decided to shoot the two films separately.

The Royal Mile between Roxburgh's Close and Edinburgh's old fish market during filming

Filming began on January 23, 2017 at Pinewood Studios in Atlanta under the working title Mary Lou . Filming began in Scotland at the end of February 2017 and lasted about six months. The filming locations included the Scottish Highlands , Glasgow and Edinburgh , all of which were shot on Cockburn Street in the historic old town. The film was also shot in March and April 2017 on the Royal Mile between Roxburgh's Close and Edinburgh's old fish market. The fight scene in Scotland shown in the film was also filmed in Edinburgh on the premises and inside the Waverley Train Station, for which huge green screens were set up on the film set. In early May 2017 recordings were made at Durham Cathedral in Durham , in St Abbs, at St Giles' Cathedral and in front of Inverness Castle on the Ness . However, some of the resulting recordings were not used in the finished film. The rice terraces of Banaue in the Ifugao Province in the north of the Philippines can be seen when Thanos overlooks his new retreat at the end. Further studio recordings took place in the Wardpark Studios in Cumbernauld . Shooting ended on July 14, 2017. It is the first film from Hollywood that was shot entirely with IMAX ARRI Alexa 65 digital cameras.

The filming was visited several times in early 2017 by Stan Lee , the creator of some comic book characters such as Spider-Man , Doctor Strange and Iron Man .

Film music and publication

The score was composed by Alan Silvestri . The soundtrack with Silvestri's film music, published by Marvel Music and Hollywood Records and comprising a total of 23 pieces of music and a further 30 in the Deluxe Edition, was released on April 27, 2018 as a download and on May 18, 2018 as CD. On May 4, 2018, the soundtrack entered the UK Soundtrack Album Charts Top 50 at number 6. On May 11, 2018, it debuted at number 5 on the US soundtrack album charts and at number 92 on the Billboard 200 . In the first scene with the Guardians of the Galaxy, they are listening to the song Rubberband Man by the Spinners from 1976.

The film celebrated its world premiere on April 23, 2018 in Los Angeles and was released in German, Austrian and Swiss-German cinemas on April 26, 2018 . It was released in US cinemas on April 27, 2018 and in Chinese cinemas on May 11, 2018. Avengers: Infinity War has been shown in the cinema in the Saudi Arabian capital Riyadh since April 26, 2018 , after a long-term cinema ban had fallen there a few days earlier with a performance of Black Panther . Movie theaters have been banned in the country since the 1980s.

Shortly after the first film teaser was shown at San Diego Comic-Con 2017 , which was also shown about a week earlier at Disney's D23 Expo 2017, it was leaked on the Internet . On November 26, 2017, six videos with or without sound with scenes from the film were leaked via the video portal Vimeo . Screenshots of these videos were leaked ten days earlier by the same person.

The first trailer was shown for the first time on November 29th on the US show Good Morning America and then published on the Internet. This trailer is different from the teaser that was shown at D23 Expo 2017 and San Diego Comic-Con 2017.

A second teaser was released within the 52nd Super Bowl on February 4, 2018. The second trailer was released on March 16, 2018.

In the USA, the film has been available online since July 31, 2018 . The DVD or Blu-ray was released on August 14, 2018. In Germany and Austria, the film was originally supposed to be available in stores on September 18, but was brought forward to September 6, 2018. The 3D Blu-rays of the previous MCU films contained the IMAX versions, if available, which offered more content in some scenes at the top and bottom of the screen. In Avengers: Infinity War , however, this was omitted, although the film was shot entirely in the larger IMAX format. The film only appeared in the regular version, in which larger black bars can be seen at the top and bottom of the picture. An IMAX version with trimmed sides (thus incomplete) was published in Russian Prime Video and distributed by Warez Groups . For some time there was no justification for the discontinuation of the IMAX version in retail; the IMAX version of the subsequent film Ant-Man and the Wasp was released again in 2018 . At a Q&A event, Joe Russo stated that the IMAX Corporation finally decided to discontinue the 3D Blu-ray because the format is owned by the company. He announced that in the future there will be an opportunity to view the IMAX version outside of theaters.

reception

Age rating

In the US, the film was rated PG-13 by the MPAA . In Germany it was approved by the FSK from the age of 12. The reason for the release states: “The comic film adaptation is told using the typical means of its genre and, in addition to fantastic characters, features numerous opulent action scenes. It is always easy to distinguish between good and bad. The speed and drama of the events as well as violent depictions can overwhelm children under the age of 12, but 12-year-olds are able to process them in the typical genre context. The alternation of exciting and relaxing passages, numerous humorous breaks and the clearly fictional overdrawing of the characters and the story allow this age group to distance themselves sufficiently. ”The youth media commission in Austria marked the film as free from 12 years .

Reviews

So far, the film has won over 85 percent of Rotten Tomatoes critics and received a Metascore of 68 out of 100 possible points on Metacritic .

In initial reactions after the removal of the social media embargo, film critics via Twitter were enthusiastic about the film, which was full of Easter eggs and references, even though it was criticized that the film felt like the first half of a two-parter, although Marvel had emphasized several times that it shouldn't be. The first international press reviews were largely enthusiastic about the film.

Eric Eisenberg of CinemaBlend speaks of breathtaking moments, a great interaction between the characters and often devastating surprises. His colleague Conner Schwerdtfeger says that Avengers: Infinity War is moving to the next level and has been one of the most emotional, intense and haunting experiences of his life.

The international press was overwhelmingly enthusiastic about the film. The German reviews also followed suit. Sebastian Ossowski from IGN described the film as both "unbelievable" and "a prelude to what is perhaps the greatest superhero epic with a grandiose finale" that has been tuned down to the last detail.

Felix Schütz described the film as a megalomaniac comic cinema, because the film is an overloaded, but also powerfully entertaining spectacle if you get involved. He sums it up: “Avengers: Infinity War is a film that sounds almost impossible on paper: more than twenty heroes, plus dozens of sidekicks and supporting characters, a new villain and henchman - and plenty of storylines from ten years of previous films that finally come together here should. I was really impressed that the Russo brothers actually conjured up a 149-minute film with a beginning, middle and end! "Martin Schwickert commented in the General-Anzeiger :" The sprawling scene changes with ritual slaughter and lots of inside jokes would probably be pretty tire quickly, if it weren't for a dazzling villain holding the hectic multi-tasking dramaturgy together. Josh Brolin gives the figure a certain basic melancholy through the hyper masculine pixel costume. "

Andreas Borcholte from Spiegel Online said that the Hollywood events of the 1970s with numerous top stars, including the Airport and Flaming Inferno , looked almost cute against the oversized disaster film Avengers: Infinity War . He sums it up: “The third 'Avengers' film makes the Marvel universe tremble and tremble, but it also withstands this re-inflation. As quickly as the story of the film is told, the more fun it is to watch screenwriters Christopher Markus and Stephen Feely bring their individual elements into position under the safe direction of Anthony and Joe Russo ('Captain America' films) then put into an ultimately compelling and thrilling dynamic. "

Box office income and digital media

The film grossed $ 640.5 million worldwide on the opening weekend - without a start in Russia and China - and thus surpassed the previous record holder Fast & Furious 8 , which made its debut in 2017 at $ 541.9 million - with Russia and China . At $ 257.7 million, including $ 39 million from previews, the film also set a historic record in the USA on its opening weekend. In China, too, where the film opened in May 2018, the film grossed 200.3 million US dollars on its opening weekend, which is the second-best film release in the history of the People's Republic. In addition to the USA and China, the film reached number 1 in the box office in the United Kingdom, South Korea, France, Japan and Germany. With revenues of US $ 2.05 billion to date, the film is number 1 among the most successful films of 2018 and number 5 (as of August 8, 2020) among the world's most successful films of all time . In Germany, the film is in fourth place in the 2018 annual charts with 3,399,651 visitors and box office earnings of 37.9 million euros . In June 2018, it overtook Titanic at the North American box office, making it the fourth highest-grossing film in North America.

With 32.8 million views, the film article on Avengers: Infinity War was on the English language Wikipedia in third place of the most visited pages of 2018.

Film analysis

Structure and dramaturgy

Katrin Hemmerling from Robots & Dragons was positive that the Russo brothers attached great importance to maintaining the tone of voice from the solo films for each character. Tom Holland as Peter Parker should still act like a little fanboy or Chris Hemsworth as Thor as a sequel to Thor: Day of Decision show that he can do more than throw his blonde mane over his shoulder, which no longer exists. In this regard, the Russos did everything right, because you immediately feel familiar with the individual characters and thus get into the film without any problems. Sidney Schering fromquote meter thinks that Christopher Markus and Stephen McFeely are repeatedly throwing novice scriptwriting rules over the heap in order to introduce further parties into this turmoil long after the film has started, thereby breaking screenplay laws.

The film also shows a variety of locations. Martin Schwickert explains in the General-Anzeiger that the six magical stones, the combined effect of which give Thanos immeasurable powers, are distributed all over the universe, the Avengers fought on different fronts against the power of evil, and the collective of heroes soon split into two Small groups oppose the villain. Sebastian Ossowski from IGN Germany says that Infinity War jumps from one place to the next, is a series of fantastic cosmic and earthly scenes and leaves the viewer almost no breathing space. In addition, the film weaves in retrospectives to make Thanos' motivation understandable, says Ossowski. Although the Russo brothers managed a little feat by having around 23 main characters save the world on the screen at the same time and more than two established superheroes appeared in each scene, the directors manage to give each character their own personal key moment and the necessary further development in the face of the impending end of the world, so Ossowski. Here, alpha animals are chased against each other every few minutes, but only with the aim of getting the punch line that the action must be driven by the opponent alone, according to Daniel Krüger from Musikexpress . Even if all the characters were cleverly distributed and had to act in different places, according to Katrin Hemmerling, this still meant that Avengers: Infinity War sometimes seemed a bit chaotic, as the story brought too much under one roof and too much between the individual actions have to jump.

The ending of the film was highlighted by critics. Martin Schwickert explains in the General-Anzeiger Bonn, for example: "The Russo brothers prove their real courage to face the unexpected in the final resolution, which not only leaves dying to the extras and with its radicalism will probably go down in film history as one of the greatest cliffhangers." Deutsche Presse-Agentur followed suit by describing the end of the film as a "great, wonderfully melancholy and thoroughly thought-provoking finale". Andreas Borcholte from Spiegel online also emphasized the extent of the end of the film: “And the surprisingly quiet end of the film goes beyond all dimensions of the usual blockbuster cinema with a cliffhanger of epic proportions that is already fueling expectations for the fourth 'Avengers' film . "

Film genre

Sidney Schering notes that the accuracy with which the many characters are written in their handling of the impending catastrophe and embodied by their actors gives this superhero attack personality. So be Infinity War a bombastic superhero disaster movie , which, unlike previous Marvel blockbusters but not a Hollywood production let fall into the classic three acts. From fast-paced scuffle to wild exchanges of fire to science fiction and fantasy hustle and bustle , chaotic turmoil and massive battles, practically every sub-category of action cinema is served, according to Schering, which prevents the risk of monotony. The film also features an often improvised and overused humor, which, however, steadily gives way to the approaching despair and overwhelming power of Thanos in the second half, according to Sebastian Ossowski, and the last third of the film is bitterly angry and the most serious that Marvel has done in the MCU so far have. The music express also says Infinity War will end with the greatest catastrophe ever to be seen on screen: "Thanos reaches his goal, snaps his gloved fingers and kills half of all living things in the universe."

Thanos: Evil and its Motives

For Karsten Scholz from buffed.de , Thanos is the meanest, most impressive, but also the most complex villain the MCU has seen so far. Even if the Titan is breathed into life through CGI effects , Josh Brolin succeeds brilliantly in giving Thanos a soul, says Scholz. Martin Schwickert says in the General-Anzeiger that Brolin gives the figure a certain basic melancholy through the hyper masculine pixel costume. According to Schwickert, the self-proclaimed redeemer seems to be conscious of his own delusions , and in the Shakespearean conflict with his stepdaughter Gamora he even begins to waver in his dictatorial parties.

The shots of the scene in which Thanos overlooks his new retreat at the end of the film were taken on the rice terraces of Banaue

Even for Felix Schütz from PC Games , Thanos has significantly more inner workings to offer than any other villain who has appeared in the MCU so far, which is why, in his opinion, the authors grant him plenty of quiet moments and dialogue scenes. Sebastian Ossowski from IGN Germany notes that in Thanos the Russos also created a character with emotional depth and complexity: “You believe him when he says that he wants to bring the universe into balance. He opposes the overpopulation and finite resources with his plan of genocide . ”Regarding his henchmen, the Black Order, Ossowski remarks that they are authentic and, above all, serious opponents for the Avengers.

Daniel Krüger of the Musikexpress says about Thanos' motive, since the home planet of the mad titan was destroyed by overpopulation, he wants to halve the life in the universe. Fairness, as it is explained at the beginning of the film, is what Thanos calls this act of genocide, with which he wants to bring the scales of the universe into balance. Unlike in other films, Thanos ultimately achieved his goal, and in the last scene you can see him sitting contentedly in an idyll, says Krüger: "He is smiling, he has fulfilled his mission and redeemed the universe from overpopulation."

Meaning for the MCU

Avengers: Infinity War is the climax that the Marvel Cinematic Universe has been working towards for ten years. Andreas Borcholte of Spiegel Online explains that over this time and 18 interwoven films, the Marvel film studios under the leadership of visionary producer Kevin Feige worked towards this preliminary climax of an unprecedented experiment. The infinity stones that give Thanos his ultimate power were scattered in a variety of films during this time, such as Guardians of the Galaxy , Captain America: The First Avenger , Thor - The Dark Kingdom , Avengers: Age of Ultron and Doctor Strange , but also Thanos' opponents, were able to distinguish themselves as superheroes in individual films, such as next to Doctor Strange also Peter Parker in Spider-Man: Homecoming and T'Challa in Black Panther .
