The Olympic men's ice hockey tournament of the 1948 Winter Olympics in St. Moritz ( Switzerland ) was also the 15th IIHF - Ice Hockey World Championship and the 26th European Ice Hockey Championship . The games took place from January 30th to February 8th, 1948. Nine teams took part; the tournament was carried out in league play .

For the first time after the war, record world champions Canada were there again, winning their twelfth title and their fourth Olympic gold medal. The Czechoslovakia finished the tournament only because of the goal difference just to second place and was the eighth time European champion.
Canada was not rated as highly at first, but gained momentum as the tournament progressed. It was an unusually tough team and the fastest team, which replaced the better technology of the ČSR with strength. The defense was particularly good with only five goals against, Halder was the best man in the storm. The ČSR, the most uniform and technically best team in the tournament, only played at half speed in the final match against the USA. Switzerland clearly had the third best team, even though the defeat against the ČSR was extremely high.

However, the tournament was overshadowed by a scandal. The USA team competed with professional players and was therefore subsequently disqualified by the International Olympic Committee . The Americans were not hit particularly hard, however, as they had not won a medal anyway due to their disappointing performance at this Olympic tournament. The "AAU team" that was not needed left Dübendorf on February 6th at 11 am on a Swissair scheduled flight via Paris , from where the journey continued with a special aircraft operated by the "Trans-World Airline" from 9 pm.

Final table and medals

Due to the use of paid players, the placement of the USA was not counted for the Olympic Games, but for the World Cup. For the European Championship only the placements of the European teams were taken into account.
