Horst Hoffmann (organ builder)

Horst Hoffmann, master organ builder

Horst Hoffmann (born July 1, 1944 in Ostheim / Rhön ) is a German organ builder and restorer in organ building.

history

Horst Hoffmann was born in 1944 as the son of the organ builder Otto Hoffmann in Ostheim before the Rhön. He is married and has four kids.

Horst Hoffmann learned the trade of organ and harmonium builder from 1960 to 1963 in his father's workshop, which was founded by his great-grandfather Johann Georg Markert in Ostheim in 1848. He deepened his specialist knowledge through a long internship in pipe making at Killinger in Beihingen, advanced training courses at the ISO and several organ study trips. After completing his apprenticeship, he began training as an air force officer, and in 1966 he left the Bundeswehr as a lieutenant .

After completing his military service, Horst Hoffmann worked in his father's workshop as a workshop manager, designer and voicer. Under his management, the old workshop in Marktstrasse was expanded and, ultimately, in 1970 a new workshop for around 25 employees was built in Ludwig-Jahn-Strasse in several construction phases. In 1975 he passed the master craftsman examination in Nuremberg. In 1985 he and his brother took over the father's workshop in Ostheim.

In 1974 Horst Hoffmann was elected to the governing bodies of the Association of German Organ Builders (BDO). From 1986 he was a member of the board, deputy chairman and 2000-2014 chairman. In 1992 he was a co-founder of the “Thuringian Orgelsommers eV” in Arnstadt and 1st vice-president of the association until 2007. When the organ building museum Schloss Hanstein e. V. he was the founding chairman in 1993, he ran the museum until 2006. The main exhibits of the museum come from the family property of the Ostheimer organ builders Markert and Hoffmann.

In 1995 Horst Hoffmann was appointed publicly appointed and sworn expert for the organ and harmonium building trade and in 1997 he was appointed restorer in this trade. For many years he was an honorary member of the guild's journeyman's and master's examination committee.

In 2010 Horst Hoffmann sold his company share to the organ builder Christoph Schindler. Since then the company has been run under the name Hoffmann und Schindler . Under Horst Hoffmann's responsibility, around 334 new organs, restorations and major conversions were carried out in the Ostheim organ building workshop. Horst Hoffmann had intensive contact with the organologist Hermann Fischer and dealt very early with the preservation and restoration of historical organs in Franconia. As early as 1973, the Will organ (1722) in the Carmelite Church in Bad Neustadt an der Saale was restored in an exemplary manner and presented to an international specialist audience at the GdO conference in Würzburg. In the following years u. a. the Döring organ (1738) of the Ostheim town church and several Seuffert and Schlimbach organs have been restored. After reunification, valuable historical organs in Thuringia were saved from deterioration and were thoroughly restored.

The work area of the workshop now extended across Germany and many instruments were created, including modern "organ sculptures" in Sulzfeld and Wargolshausen in collaboration with the canon J. Lensen (Würzburg). Hoffmann's professional highlight was the reconstruction of the so-called Bach organ in the Bach Church in Arnstadt , JS Bach's first organist position. Hoffmann's concept with the reconstruction of the Wender organ on the re-installed second gallery and the restoration of the existing "Bach organ" was convincing. A detailed reconstruction of the Wender organ (1703) was made there from 1997 to 1999, which was then removed and played by the young Johann Sebastian Bach. From the historical organ only parts of the front and 320 organ pipes were preserved. Due to the decades of restoration work by the Hoffmann workshop, special knowledge and skills could be brought in, which made it possible to produce a reconstruction that was as close as possible to the original organ in terms of technology and sound. The existing Bach organ by Steinmeyer (1913, III / 55) has been completely restored and equipped with a new console.

In 2017 Horst Hoffmann was awarded the golden master craftsman's certificate and the seal of the Lower Franconian Chamber of Crafts.
