Monteroni d'Arbia is an Italian commune in the province of Siena in the Tuscany region with 9067 inhabitants (as of December 31, 2019).

The place extends over 105  km² . It is located about 13 km southeast of the provincial capital Siena and about 60 km southeast of the regional capital Florence in the Crete Senesi countryside . Monteroni is in the climatic classification of Italian communities in zone D, 1 621 GG.

The main rivers in the municipality are the Arbia (13 km in the municipality), the Biena (5 km), the Sorra (17 km), the Stile (7 km) and the Tressa (4 km).

Its districts include Lucignano d'Arbia , Le More , Cuna , Grotti , Ponte a Tressa , Ponte d'Arbia , Quinciano , Radi ( Radi di Creta ) and Ville di Corsano .

The neighboring municipalities are Asciano , Buonconvento , Murlo , Siena and Sovicille .

history

The name comes from the Monte Roni hill and is located on the Arbia river . The town center developed around the mill fortress built in 1322 and was closely tied to Santa Maria della Scala and Siena in the Middle Ages , in whose sphere of influence it remained until 1554. That year the Marchese di Marigiano destroyed the place in the conflict between Florence and Siena. For a long time, Monteroni d'Arbia was under the administration of the mayor of Buonconvento . In the time of Napoleon in 1810 the community was built.

  • Mulino ad acqua fortificato , fortified water mill in the center from the 14th century, which belonged to the Grancia di Cuna . Shelter like the Grancia di Cuna from the Santa Maria della Scala Hospital in Siena.
  • Pieve dei Santi Giusto e Donato , Pieve in the center of the village on the main road, which is no longer active today and whose function was replaced in the 1970s by a new building behind the water mill. The building still exists today.
  • Grancia di Cuna , a fortified courtyard in the district of Cuna, already existed in 1152 as an independent hospital on the Via Francigena and was acquired in 1295 by the Rector Ristoro Menghi for Santa Maria della Scala . From 1314 onwards, under the rector Giovanni di Tese dei Tolomei, the complex was expanded considerably.
  • Chiesa dei Santi Giacomo e Cristoforo a Cuna , church in the district of Cuna, built before 1314 and rebuilt in the same year. The oldest frescoes are in the apse and date from the early 14th century. Contains works by Andrea di Bartolo ( Storie di San Giacomo and Sant'Ansano e San Giacomo ).

  • Pieve di San Giovanni Battista , Pieve in the district of Lucignano d'Arbia .
  • Chiesa di San Giacomo Apostolo , already mentioned in 1303 in Mugnano.
  • Castello di Radi , also known as Radi in Creta , a castle with three towers from the 13th century.
  • Chiesa di San Pietro Apostolo , built in the 13th century in Radi, contained the works Madonna della Stella by Amos Cassioli (today in the Museo Cassioli in Asciano) and Matrimonio mistico di Santa Caterina d'Alessandria ei Santi Giacomo e Antonio abate , the Maestro di Sant'Ivo (now in the Buonconvento Museum).
  • Chiesa di Sant'Albano a Quinciano , church, contained the works Incoronazione della Vergine e Angeli by Sano di Pietro and Immacolata Concezione coi Santi Albano e Pietro by Rutilio Manetti from 1608 (now in the Museum of Buonconvento).
  • Cappella Pieri Nerli a Quinciano , a chapel begun by Giulio Rossi and completed by Giuseppe Partini in 1861, contains works by Cesare Maccari ( Quattro Evangelisti , fresco) and Tito Sarrocchi ( Desolazione consolata dalla Fede ).
  • Chiesa di Sant'Angelo , a ruined church in the Località Ponzano, was built in the 13th century.
  • Chiesa di Santo Stefano , church in Suvignano from the 13th century. First dedicated to Santa Lucia, later renamed Santo Stefano by Francesco Piccolomini .
  • Villa di Sovignano , 18th century building in Sovignano near the hamlet of Lucignano d'Arbia, was probably built by the Piccolomini family.
  • Chiesa di Sant'Agostino alla Sorra , also called Sant'Agostino alla Tressa , Sant'Agostino a Tressa or Sant'Agostinello . Church ruin, which was mentioned as early as 1081, lies between Radi and Colle Malamerenda (Siena) and between the Sorra and Tressa rivers.
  • Pieve di San Giovanni Battista , even Pieve di Corsano called, known in the 10th century Pieve , just outside the hamlet of Ville di Corsano , since 1189 the John the Baptist is dedicated. In the 13th century, eleven churches in the area were under this pieve. Contains the works Adorazione dei pastori and Annunciazione (both lunettes ) by Alessandro Casolani .
