The Cleveland Barons were an American ice hockey franchise of the American Hockey League based in Cleveland , Ohio . They played at the Quicken Loans Arena from 2001 to 2006 . The team was relocated to Worcester , Massachusetts after the 2005/06 season and renamed Worcester Sharks .
history
After AHL ice hockey was played from 1937 to 1973 and NHL ice hockey from 1976 to 1978 under the name Barons in Cleveland, it was decided to relocate an AHL franchise there in the new century . For this reason, brothers George and Gordon Gund bought the partnership rights of the Kentucky Thoroughblades , which were located in Lexington , Kentucky, in 2001 . The new owners hoped for an upswing through the move, whereby the choice of name played an important role. At the beginning of the 2001/02 season, the Barons started an AHL season for the first time in almost 30 years.
In the time of their existence, the Barons were the farm team of the NHL team San Jose Sharks . They also worked with the Fresno Falcons , Toledo Storm (both ECHL ) and the Youngstown Steelhounds ( CHL ). They managed to reach the play-offs only once in the five seasons . There they lost to the Hamilton Bulldogs in the first round .
For the 2006/07 season , the Barons were relocated from the Sharks to Worcester , Massachusetts , and their nickname was adapted to that of the NHL team. Starting with the 2007-08 season, the Lake Erie Monsters , which will be settled in Cleveland, will take the place of the Barons and be the Colorado Avalanche's farm team .
